Jasmine Harris is a coach’s dream. She learns moves in drills and in practice, and she finds ways to execute them in a game situation. Not only does she perfect the move, but her IQ allows her to see the court in ways where she knows she can use the move going full speed. She has a finesse attacking the basket and making adjustments at the rim that allow her to score, and she can definitely knock down her shot from all over the court. She was a major part of the success for Northern this past season going undefeated in the regular season and conference tournament. It was no surprise that she was awarded player of the year for District 7.
Highlights
Charlotte Torgerson was helpful for the strong season the Watauga Pioneers saw this season. It’s normal to see her score double digits as she is lethal from deep knocking down her shot. She does a nice job adjusting her body to get around her defender making the dish to her teammates making the cut or sealing underneath the basket. She can handle the ball well running the point, or she can step out to the shooting guard position. This ability to play multiple guard positions also translates to the defensive side of the ball as she can strip the ball away from her opponents and score off of these turnovers.
Jayda Angel picked up player of the year awards in her district, and that is certainly well earned. She also hit her 1,000th point this season even before the playoffs began. Besides being a dynamic ball handler and scorer, she is sure to do all of the “little things” including getting inside for rebounds. She’s persistent on the glass grabbing offensive rebounds for her own second chance opportunities, and she can grab a defensive rebound to turn it into fast break points with ease. There is something about her athleticism that makes her so fun to watch.
Madison Pounds is a full court player showing IQ and aggressiveness on both ends. On defense, she is quick to knock the ball away from her opponents and grab the steal that converts to points for her team. Her quickness is apparent on offense as she is constantly moving to find the gaps, get the ball, and knock down her shot. She attacks the basket well filling the lanes easily to score some points, and she finds her open teammates easily for their own points.
Highlights
Halisi Whitley has been playing with a very successful Grace Christian team over the past several years leading to back to back state championships. She is a knock down shooter from deep scoring as she creates her own space or even slides into the open areas ready to put up her shot. She does an excellent job of passing and cutting to keep the offense moving and continue to shift the defense. Her change of direction moves are well above average getting by her opponents with ease to be productive on offense.
Jazlyn Harris fit right in with the increased tempo at QEA this season handling the ball up the court to find her open teammates on fast breaks. She can take it all the way herself showing nice athleticism adjusting at the rim no matter who is trying to block her shot. She can pull up from beyond the arc or dribble penetrate opening up the court for others. Her change of speed will definitely lose her defenders, and she uses that quickness on the other end to jump into passing lanes for some steals.
