Lansing Catholic got out to an early lead, but Westfield Prep battled back and chipped away. Eventually pulling within 1 point, and even tying the game, multiple times. But they could never grab the lead as Lansing Catholic responded every time. Lansing Catholic ended the contest with a 78-69 victory. They will now face Grand Rapids West Catholic at the Breslin Center at 7:30PM in the state semifinals.
There was a ton of high level talent for both teams that was showcased in this game. We’re going to take a look at 4 stars from the Lansing Catholic win against Westfield Prep.
If I gave a game MVP, there’s no doubt that I would hand it to Leah Richards Leah Richards 6’0″ | PF Lansing Catholic | 2024 State MI . She came out firing, flaunting a confident and smooth jumper from behind the arc. Richards forced hard closeouts and quick rotations which freed up teammates as well. She played a terrific outside-in game, picking up some tough points at the rim. Richards hit some big momentum ending shots. If Richards shoots like this for 2 more games, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them celebrating at the Breslin Center.
Richards faced an incredibly tough task. If you know girls basketball in Michigan, you know that Doc Cornell coached teams are going to bring the fire defensively. Richards had the task of being one of the primary ball handlers against possibly the most intense defense in the state. She did an admirable job. On top of that, she hit some big 3 point shots especially early, and once they beat the press or broke the trap she got the ball where it needed to go.
Highlights
I’ll say it again: Shamya Reid Shamya Reid 5’5″ | PG Westfield Prep | 2023 State MI is a Division 1 college basketball talent. I’ve seen her take on the best, play toe to toe with the best, and even beat the best. She was at it again last night. Reid was prolific on offense and was the catalyst for many of the mini runs that tied the game or put Westfield Prep within a point or 2. Reid attacked the rim and drew fouls, buried 3 point jumpers and fed teammates in scoring positions. She might have had the play of the night with a pretty behind the back pass that led to a layup.
Marshall didn’t have her biggest game stat wise, but from an evaluation standpoint and an impact on the game standpoint, she was terrific. Marshall keeps getting faster up the floor with the ball and can really push tempo. She moves free and easy and has the blow by speed that coaches at the next level are looking for. I love the way that Marshall can work on the defensive end pressuring the ball.
