Continue ReadingWhen I saw Molly Joyce Molly Joyce 5’7″ | PG Bishop Garrigan | 2023 State IA play at the state tournament I was amazed at how efficient she has become as a shooter from the outside. Within her Bishop Garrigan team’s offense that she was apart of, a big objective was to feed their all state post player Audi Crooks Audi Crooks 6’3″ | C Bishop Garrigan | 2023 State #42 Nation IA . This situation led to a lot of open looks out of the post to their shooters on the perimeters, Joyce being one of those shooters/scorers. On a consistent basis she was making the open shots she was given while also being the point guard who was setting her team up in the first place. This Winter she will join D2 Truman State to help them find success on the court. A task that won’t be easy but is do-able with the drive and skill that Joyce possesses.
Highlights
Regan Rice Regan Rice 5’8″ | SG Marion | 2023 State IA put together a nice senior season for the Marion Wolverines before heading off to college and lacing up for the Grandview Vikings out of Des Moines. Rice is a quick shooting guard with a nice first step. She can handle it a good amount but excels at shooting the ball with the ability to hear up quick. She knows how to get to her spots and move quickly to the open area so that she can get a nice look at the basket. Throughout the season she seemed to get more and more comfortable each game attacking the hoop and being aggressive, a talent that I’m sure her next coach is going to want at the college level this winter. Looking forward Rice can be a good contributor for the Vikings if she stays dedicated and keeps working, something I’m sure will keep occurring.
With a lot of attention at the forward position being taken up by Sahara Williams Sahara Williams 5’11” | SF Waterloo West | 2023 State IA these past few seasons it has left a lot of room for others to step up and make some big time plays. One of those players was Sierra Moore Sierra Moore 6’1″ | PF Waterloo West | 2023 State IA . Moore is a nicely size forward who can rebound efficiently, score in the post, and knows the game of basketball at an extensive level. This past season she did a good job making her mark and taking hold of all the opportunity given. It is one of the main reason her team did as well as they did over these past few years, especially this season. Moore is committed to play at Central College, where she will have the stage to show off how good she can really be in front of a much bigger audience.
Mary Walker Mary Walker 5’6″ | SG Newell-Fonda | 2023 State IA made her presence known this post season and especially at the state tournament, showing off that she was a real team player on a big time stage. Walker is consistent and efficient. She doesn’t do too much putting her in risk of creating a turnover or bad looks at the hoop, instead she stays in her lane and works the ball around, looking for the best possible shot each and every possession. She does a good job of holding the tempo of her game in check and making sure that she knows about everything happening on the floor each possession. Overall when looking at the state tournament she was a top point guard who stood out each game she played in and that’s something she should be proud of moving forward, win or lose.
Laney Pilcher put together one of the best seasons of any player in the state for her senior year and it needs to be talked about. Pilcher, a 5’8 listed forward, is a player that really can do it all for her team. For her senior season she averaged 24.6 PPG, 9.7 RPG, and 3.1 APG. Not to mention that she registered 112 steals and 12 blocks throughout her teams 23 games. Like I said, one of the best overall stat lines in Iowa regardless of class this past season. I’m not sure if Pilcher is committed to be playing at the next level or not yet but she should be able to find a home somewhere. With the numbers she put up this past season, including a 40 point performance and some other big moments, I’m sure someone will come in late and give her a shot. Everyone always says actions over words and I think that she has done a good job having her actions speak for themselves.
