I was able to take in a number of high school games, events and tournaments throughout the 2022-23 high school season. Here are some top post players that stood out this season.
Lety Vasconcelos (Montverde Academy) – 6’7 Center – Class of 2023 – Baylor
At 6’7 Lety is a huge presence in the paint and impacted the game in so many ways. On the season she averaged 4.7 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. The team was talented enough that she did not need to put up big number’s night in and night out but her control of the paint was just as effective as her stats. She is headed to Baylor next season but before then, she will try and help Montverde Academy win the Geico Nationals at the end of the month.
Kayla Nelms Kayla Nelms 6'1" | PF Miami Country Day | 2024 State FL (Miami Country Day) – 6’2 Forward – Class of 2024
Nelms was not able to finish the season on the court with her teammates, but Miami Country Day got the job without her, taking home the 3A state championship. While her teammates helped carry the squad to victory in Lakeland, it was Nelms who did most of the carrying of the heavy load during the regular season. Few players were as efficient and as effective on the offensive end on a nightly basis as Nelms. At 6’2, she can play inside and out, she can post up, she can attack off the bounce, and she can let it fly from 3. She shoots an exceptionally high percentage from the field, has soft hands, a high IQ, good court vision and simply put is a winner!
Mya Johnson (St. Thomas Aquinas) – 6’1 Forward / Center – Class of 2024
Mya Johnson might be one of, if not the most improved player from the start of the high school season to the end of the high school season. She is a skilled low post player with good footwork, soft hands and deceptive athleticism. Throughout the season, Johnson was a steady presence in the paint. Her size and mass proved to be tough matchups for opposing defenses and when given the opportunity to establish low post position, she is hard to move off the block.
Kiara Williams Kiara Williams 6'1" | PF Palm Bay Magnet | 2024 State FL (Palm Bay) – 6’1 Forward – Class of 2024
Williams is a beast down low. She is an undersized interior player but is physical and aggressive and uses her body well. Despite being undersized, she consistently competes and dominates players 2-4 inches taller. Williams finished 2nd in scoring at 13.1 points per game while leading the team with 8.0 rebounds and 53% from the field. Palm Bay finished 21-9 on the season before getting knocked out by eventual state champion Lake Highland Prep but Williams was a big part of the team’s success and will be the teams go to player next season with Emma Risch Emma Risch 6'2" | PG Palm Bay | 2023 State #23 Nation FL graduating.
Brinyia Rolax Brinyia Rolax 6'3" | C Somerset Prep North Lauderdale | 2023 FL (Somerset Prep) – 6’3 Forward – Class of 2023
Rolax had a big season for Somerset Prep wrapping her high school career averaging 6.9 points per game to go along with 6.2 rebounds per game. She was extremely efficient on the offensive end leading the team at 59% from the field. At 6’3, she finished well in the paint, impacted the game as a rebounder and a shot blocker and ran the floor hard. She is an unsigned senior with good size, a good body, and is a solid post prospect.
Sofi Miller (Windermere Prep) – 6’2 Forward – Class of 2025
Miller took home player of the year honors leading her squad to a 17-9 record, averaging a double double with 15.4 points and 11.6 rebounds per game while shooting 44% from the field and 75%. Miller is one of the most under rated players in the state as there are few players her size and her mass with her skill. She can finish going over both shoulders with both hands, has range to 15 feet, and can put the ball to the floor from the high post. Look for Miller to be a big stock riser!
