Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in high school girls basketball by naming the top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and individual excellence in addition to local and state accolades.
Trinity Turner Trinity Turner 5'7" | CG Dr. Phillips | 2024 State FL of Dr. Phillips (Orlando) is the 2022-23 MaxPreps Florida High School Girls Basketball Player of the Year. The 5’8 junior point guard led the Panthers to a 30-1 record and their second straight Class 7A state championship, concluding the season by scoring 22 in the 7A finals game, helping lead the Dr. Phillips Panthers to their second consecutive state championship.
Turner averaged 19.5 points, 10.9 rebounds, 7.1 assists and 4.6 steals per game, scoring in double figures in 29 of her teams 31 games including a season high 34 points vs Lake Highland Prep in January.
A dynamic playmaker, Turner played multiple guard positions for Dr. Phillips all season both playing off the ball and running the point guard position. A savvy ballhandler with a high basketball IQ, who does an excellent job changing direction and speed with the ball in her hands, dictates the tempo of every game she competes in.
Like many great players, Turner always steps up on the biggest stages against top competition. Up against local rival Winter Haven in the title game, and trailing by 10 at halftime, she scored 19 of her game-high 22 points in the second half, leading the way for a come behind win outscoring Winter Haven 38-24 on the way to a 47-43 victory, helping Dr. Phillips repeat as state champions.
The 19 point 2nd half was eerily similar to the previous season where was held to just 4 points in the first half vs Miami Senior High School in the 2022 title game, only to turn it up in the second half and dropping 15 in the second half and winning her first championship game 47-45.
But not just a post season award, Turner was named the MaxPreps High School Girls Basketball Player of the Year over a number of talented players in the state of Florida such as Mjracle Sheppard Mjracle Sheppard 5'8" | CG Montverde Academy | 2023 State FL , Karina Gordon Karina Gordon 5'8" | CG St. Thomas Aquinas | 2023 State FL , Taliah Scott Taliah Scott 5'8" | SG St. John's Country Day | 2023 State #31 Nation FL , Emma Risch Emma Risch 6'2" | PG Palm Bay | 2023 State #23 Nation FL , and others. The award spoke to her overall body of work all throughout the 2022-23 season and her extremely consistent offensive and defensive performances and production. Just a Junior, Turner will have the opportunity to return to Dr. Phillips and attempt to win back-to-back to back state championships and consecutive players of the year.
Nyla Harris of Lake Highland Prep was the 2021-22 MaxPreps Florida Player of the Year. The current Louisville freshman averaged 17.8 points and 11.4 rebounds per game last season to lead the Highlanders to the Class 4A state title. Each state’s MaxPreps Player of the Year will be considered for inclusion in the MaxPreps All-America Team, which will be released in April. Past selections include 2022 WNBA Most Valuable Player A’ja Wilson (2014) as well as 2022 All-WNBA picks Skylar Diggins-Smith (2009), Sabrina Ionescu (2016), Jonquel Jones (2012), Nneka Ogwumike (2008), Kelsey Plum (2013), Breanna Stewart (2012) and Alyssa Thomas (2010).
