On the weekend of April 1st and 2nd Southwest Showcase had its annual Girls Main Event. This event had some of the better talent in the valley on display.

Here are some of the standouts from the 17U Gold division that I saw.

[player_tooltip player_id='205641' first='Elli' last='Guiney'] Millennium (AZ Elite 17U Black)

The versatile combo guard continued to show why she is near the top of her class. She played at her own pace and rarely forced any action on offense. She sees plays one play ahead as she's not looking at who's guarding her but at what the defense is doing in anticipation of her beating her defender. She is in line for a big spring/summer.

[player_tooltip player_id='205646' first='Eanae' last='Dagons'] Desert Vista (AZ Elite 17U Black)

The junior showed her lead guard skills by pushing the ball when the chance was there or pulling it out and running the offense. She has been consistently working on her shot and it showed. On defense, she sits down and makes the ball handler extremely uncomfortable.

[player_tooltip player_id='588408' first='Nykyah' last='Williams'] Phhoenix Prep (Dub's 17U)

No defender could keep the junior point guard in front of them. She's almost impossible to double team due to her quickness and low center of gravity. Williams was a one person fast break in that she was faster with the ball than most without it. When her outside shot was falling, it was a show for the fans.

[player_tooltip player_id='371488' first='Sidney' last='Anderson'] Ironwood Ridge (AZ Elite 17U Black)

A confident shooter, Anderson let it go from anywhere at any time. She moves very well without the ball and plays with a high basketball IQ.

[player_tooltip player_id='205640' first='Jocelyn' last='Michelle Chavez'] Valley Vista (Bonitas)

The junior guard was like a coach on the floor. She got her own shots but what was impressive is that she helped her teammates get in position if they were out of position. The consummate leader Chavez has good handles and knows how to use her body to shield off the defender.

[player_tooltip player_id='605055' first='Rachel' last='Roderick'] Sedona Red Rock (AZ Elite 17U Black)

Roderick ran the floor the way a post player should and rebounded very well. She kept the ball high in the post and passed very well out of the high post.

[player_tooltip player_id='589986' first='Isabella' last='Ivy'] Perry (VBC National 17U)

The quick point guard played with excellent poise. Ivy got into the lane with ease and finished with either hand. She was hard to contain due to her shiftiness and change of speeds.

[player_tooltip player_id='339069' first='Michaela' last='Fairwell'] Desert Vista (AZ Elite 16U Black)

Fairwell kept herself a factor in games by doing a variety of things. She hit outside shots, slashed to the goal for layups, played lock down defense, and did whatever her team needed to win.

[player_tooltip player_id='261664' first='Natalie' last='Scherzer'] Chaparral (Reel Team Six 17U)

Scherzer impressed me in that she is a shooter but showed much more. She showed that she could put it on the floor and finish with either hand. She also showed a nice floater in her bag as well as other moves.
