May begins on Monday, so for no specific reason at all, I wanted to take this opportunity to highlight five ladies whose names incorporate “m-a-y” somewhere within their monikers. All five can be seen on the grassroots circuit as well.
Maya Alexis
Maya Alexis
Maya stepped up this Winter and was a main contributor for the Lady Achaeans, averaging 9.0 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 3.4 steals per game. She is a nice athlete with some length, and she brings nice energy to the floor. Offensively, she is more of a driver who can also score it opportunistically off of rebounds, but she did show the ability to occasionally knock down an open perimeter jumper this season. Additionally, she causes problems at the defensive end of the floor and gets a number of deflections/steals.
Amaya is a nice small college prospect as a wing guard. She consistently shoots it from the perimeter, but over the last year she has become a much more effective driver and multilevel scorer. Her handle has improved, and she can slide over and play a little point at times now, too. At her size, if she can become more of a full-time point guard, it would certainly help her recruiting, but her ability to shoot it and defend multiple positions gives her really good value whether she plays on or off the ball.
Maya has always been a major matchup problem because of her height and ability to shoot the ball. She is extremely long, fluid/smooth, and she has a quick release and needs little time or space to get her shot away. As she has gained strength, she has been a more aggressive scorer attacking the basket, and if she continues down that path and becomes a consistent multilevel scorer, she will be incredibly difficult to defend. Over the last couple of years, Maya has earned her share of Power-5 offers.
Jamaya is a very intriguing post prospect because she’s one of the few true back-to-the-basket posts in the state. She is big, strong, physical, and understands how to use her power to create space and/or hold her position. She has soft hands, she can finish over either shoulder, and she works hard around the paint. Defensively, she will initiate contact before her opponent can get settled, and she’s good at rooting people out of the lane. She provides a great deal of value because of her size and strength.
Highlights
Maya had an explosive Freshman season and helped put Faith Christian on the map. With the strong 2026 class they possess, the Lady Eagles could be in for deep playoff runs in future seasons. In the meantime, she looks like she has put in a lot of work on her perimeter jumper, and she has added some range to it as well. She is extremely long, fluidly athletic, and she can cause a lot of problems defensively because of it. Maya has already earned a handful of Division-I offers, and more are sure to come soon.
