Yesterday, I decided at the last minute to check out some games at the Grassroots Memorial Weekend Shootout at the Hammond Sportsplex and Purdue University Northwest in Hammond. It wasn’t a big event in terms of quantity, but there were out-of-state programs like Example Sports, Michigan Drive Premier, the Illinois Lady Lightning, and Michigan Crossover in attendance. The Indiana field was much smaller, but I was able to catch a couple of Always 100 teams, a couple of the City Elite teams, a couple of OPS teams, plus the 17U Region Rebels . Below is a quick look at six Sophomores who played well when I was able to catch them in action.
Whitney is a strong, physical, tough wing prospect who plays with an outstanding motor. She is always around the action and loves to seek physicality, whether it be on defense, rebounding, or attacking the basket. Offensively, she is a solid North/South attacker off the bounce, plus she can knock down an open rhythm jumper consistently. She can even initiate the offense on occasion. Defensively, she is probably best defending bigger wings and undersized forwards, but she’s certainly capable of absorbing contact and dishing it out. I really like how she energizes her teammates.

I had seen Camryn briefly in the past, but this was my first time watching her at length. She is extremely long and wiry, fluid, and somewhat smooth athletically. I’m not sure if she will still grow another inch or two, but once she finishes, she’ll need to focus on continuing to get stronger. What she does well is shoot the basketball. When her feet are set, she isn’t rushed, and she has rhythm, she’s almost automatic. On this team, she finds open space on the wings and in the corners to bury shot after shot as her teammates attack the basket and kick. I also like how Camryn uses her length defensively to affect passing lanes.
Myah has always shown great skill, ability, and potential, and she’s done enough in the past to have already earned a handful of nice Division-I offers. But now she’s really starting to come into her own because she is getting stronger and more explosive, therefore more consistent. She is handling the ball a great deal, creating plays for herself or others. She’s shooting it from the outside with more consistency, and she’s getting to the basket, absorbing contact better, and finishing around the rim with greater ease. Myah is also a problem defensively, because of her length and athletic ability, plus she’ll rebound.

Alexis was outstanding in the game I saw Saturday. She is extremely strong, physical, but also fast and athletic. She plays low to the ground, is always on attack, and she was great in transition. In the halfcourt, she knocked down open rhythm jumpers, she attacked the basket and finished through contact, plus she was a willing and capable distributor. Defensively, she used her strength to guide/control opposing ball-handlers, but she also attacked passing lanes from “help-side” and created turnovers. She is definitely someone who we will look to add to our 2026 rankings when they are updated in June.
Aly has long been a favorite of mine, and she is always around the basketball making plays. She has nice length, speed and quickness, and she plays with a nonstop motor. She looks like she could be done growing now, so as she adds strength the next couple of years, look for her all-around game to become more consistent and explosive. She is capable of knocking down open perimeter jumpers, but I think she’ll take the 31% she shot from ‘3’ in 2022-2023 and elevate it to the upper 30s, or possibly even the lower 40s throughout her career. I really like Aly’s versatility and her quiet toughness.

It has been a year since I last saw Khala play, but she is still the same, talented athlete I remember. Khala has tremendous length, wiry strength, and she’s one of the better run-and-jump athletes in the 2026 class. She can get out and go in transition, but she’s also tough and strong enough to battle in the paint at times for loose balls and rebounds. Saturday, she was constantly finishing at the basket, as she is a quick jumper and just elevates above opponents. She also has some touch and a solid handle, and she can make plays from the perimeter as well.
