The majority of the guards on this list started for their high school teams and had some major accomplishments. In this article, we highlight some of the top Freshman guards we saw at the Candice Dupree Invitational.
Green had such a feel for the game and just seemed unphased by the age and maturity of the players she was playing against. Her skillset just leaves you baffled as to how someone so young has so much game. On one play, the young guard rips through the defense and gets to the rim from the left hand side and finishes with the left hand. Next time down the court, she penetrates right, draws the defense and delivers a “dime” to a big down low. A few possessions later, she fills the lane on a fast break and she catches a high pass. Despite the high pass, there was no disruption in the timing as she gathers herself and finishes with a layup on the left side of the rim.
Satterfield is very calm and deliberate on the floor. She doesn’t try to do too much. She is the consummate point guard who looks to keep her teammates involved. Satterfield has the tools to get it done, too. She has great handles and can go left or right. She has great court vision and can pass that ball. The unflappable guard can also shoot the three and drive the ball when the drive is there. At Candice Dupree Invitational, Satterfield performed well and was one of the best floor generals in the building.
Highlights
Ament is a lengthy guard who can play the 1, 2, and 3 positions on the court. At Candice Dupree, Ament was solid, steady, and versatile, Ament was also instrumental in press break and did a good job of getting the ball to her teammates. She scored from all levels on the court, including three pointers and midrange jumpers.
Swift is one of the most natural players on the court. She just flows on the court and always seems to be a step ahead. She is versatile and plays both, the point guard position and the shooting guard position. Swift is a high IQ player who seems to always be a step ahead. She plays with great anticipation and instincts. Swift has all of the intangibles too. She shoots with great accuracy, she handles the ball very well, and she can distribute the ball on time to open teammates. Still in the eighth grade, the young guard is ahead of her time.
Young is a smooth customer out there on the court. She can put the ball in the rim in a large variety of ways. She can shoot the three pointer, shoot the floater, and shoot the short range midrange. She also excels in the transition game. Young has been playing varsity since the 6th grade and as a result has tons of in-game experiences. She is years ahead of a lot of her peers when it comes experience. When you have “been there and done that” it makes the game look easier. That’s exactly what Young brings to the table.
