This time we will look exclusively at the 16U squad and some of the 2025 players that should be on your radar.
I had seen Brooklynn play before, but it’s been a year and wow, has there been a lot of changes… for the better. She has gotten, taller, longer, and probably my favorite part, Smitherman has become more vocal. She is a talker. A coach on the floor. Telling others where they’re supposed to be on defense and offense. It is clear that she has a very high basketball IQ and the skills to go along with it. Her first step is explosive and she moves well with the ball. She showed the ability to score from multiple levels and with continued development, Brooklynn is going to be a big time college prospect!
Highlights
Macy absolutely runs the show out there and don’t let her height fool you. She went head up with McKenzie Mathurin McKenzie Mathurin 5’10” | CG Broken Arrow | 2025 State OK from the 17U squad who is committed to Nebraska and hung in there extremely well. She showed me something that I love to see when I’m out scouting and I know college coaches do too. After the first “quarter” of scrimmaging, her coach got onto her about something. She didn’t react negatively. She didn’t get down. She nodded. She looked the coach in the eye. She took the criticism. Then she went out and absolutely killed it on offense and defense. The next stoppage in play, Coach used her as the example. Now THAT is a kid you want on your team!
I wrote in my notes that I had no idea if Mikayla was a guard or a forward. For the most part, this whole 16U squad was around six feet and with them all being able to handle the ball and shoot it, I really didn’t know until they started scrimmaging, who was going to play where. Mikayla can handle it and shoot from outside with a pure stroke. Down low, she is deceptively quick and able to finish inside with some tricky moves. Pilley is a very smart player and her basketball IQ, and tremendous size, are going to get her very far.

Megan is a very strong post player. Another six-footer for Swift 16U, Shafer prefers to play inside and it’s a good thing. She has soft hands for receiving passes, often after rolling to the basket following a good screen. She finishes well down low and showed a good ability to put a body on a body when the shot goes up and high point the rebound. Playing with Swift is great for a “small school big.” Shafer is learning to rely less on her height and is working hard on the little things it takes to rebound against people of similar size.
Yet another long, tall guard/forward for this Swift squad, Madison can basically do it all. She was the leading scorer for her high school team while running the point. There is still a little youth in her decision-making at times, but that is nothing that can’t be fixed with experience which she is going to get plenty of with Swift and starting for Rejoice since her freshman season. She can shoot it and should she find herself inside, she is definitely no slouch. She works hard and simply finds a way to finish. Hunnicutt is a scoring machine when she gets it going.
