Kentuckiana Hoops put together their 1st girls camp on Saturday and it brought in a lot of really talented players from all over. While the majority of the participants were from Kentucky, most of the players were ones I had not yet gotten to see play prior to Saturday. Below, we will look at class of 2027 standouts from the 2023 Kentuckiana Hoops girls camp. Note: Usually my standout articles do not include every player that participates in the event, but every single player in attendance caught my eye at one point or another, so this will be a series of articles that discuss what stood out to me this weekend.
Class of 2027
Kourtney Peterson (5’11 | Forward | Scott)
Peterson was one of the top standouts Saturday regardless of class and definitely was in contention for MVP of the entire camp despite being a 2027 prospect. She definitely didn’t look like a 2027 with what she brought to the court. Excellent size, good footwork, and extremely versatile. Had great moves in the paint and finished tough shots on both sides of the rim. She was strong on the boards and grabbed a ton of rebounds. However, what really made her standout is how many guard skills she has as a post player. She can handle the ball well and had great court vision. Made great passes and used a variety of moves. Really just a strong player overall.
Elaine Purvis (5’8 | Guard | Montgomery County)
Purvis is another player that has an advanced skillset and high basketball IQ. She’s just a really tough player all-around. Has great moves she uses to get a step on defenders and she makes it look like a seamless task every time. Made a ton of smart plays to create for her teammates while also forcing the defense to make decisions on how to guard her. She scored and finished in a variety of ways, including knocking down some 3’s with deep range. She also recognized when she had just enough space to get her shot off and showed she can nail them even with a defender right on her.
Carley Boyd (5’11 | Wing | Raceland)
Boyd has a ton of potential and once she realizes how truly talented she is, the sky’s the limit for her. She really can contribute in every way imaginable. She has excellent length that she uses to be disruptive defensively, forcing the offense to take tough shots or give up the ball. She got her hands on the ball and timed her blocks well. She has impressive versatility as she can score around the rim, but also has in the gym range on her shot. She’s a very unselfish player and she also made a ton of smart plays for her teammates.
Paisley Pryor (5’7 | Guard | Edward Lee McClain – OH)
Pryor has excellent fundamentals. She was extremely tough on both ends of the floor and I was shocked to see she was only a 2027. She showed a lot of toughness defensively, staying in front and not giving up anything easy. She has really good court vision and awareness as well. Handled the ball well and made great passes, including through traffic. Made very strong drives to the hoops and finished strong. Really deep range shooting threat as well. Continuously caught my eye throughout the day.
Jada Ray (5’6 | Guard | Boyd County)
Like all of the players above, Ray plays with more poise than you typically see from a 2027 player. She was absolutely fearless out there and really was making an impact on both ends of the court. Got into the passing lanes and applied a lot of pressure defensively. Offensively, very smooth and smart player. Knocked down shots from all over the court and showed how quickly she can get her shot off both off the dribble and catch. Made some great hustle plays throughout the day as well.
Laila Kelley Laila Kelley 5'6" | CG Piketon | 2027 State OH (5’5 | Guard | Piketon – OH)
Kelley has the exact skills you would want from your floor general. She’s smart and plays hard every second she’s on the floor. Played great defense and kept a wide stance which made it very hard for the offense to get a step on her. Has good range on her outside shot and tough finishes around the basket. Did a great job recognizing spacing and attacking gaps. Also had good recognition when it came to timing and mismatches. She consistently crashed the boards and was doing all of the little things that sometimes go unnoticed.
Brynn Brickey Brynn Brickey 5'9" | SG South Oldham | 2027 State KY (5’7 | Guard | South Oldham)
Brickey’s work ethic and motor really stood out Saturday. I noticed in the first water break, she immediately started getting shots up and continued to put in work through the break which was impressive to see. She goes 110% every second she’s on the floor. Really crashes the boards hard and gives herself a shot to grab the rebound on every possession. Very active hands defensively and moved well without the ball offensively. Knocked down shots and was strong on her drives. Vocal and encouraging to teammates in drills. Also had great hustle and loved that she was going game speed through drills.
