The PGH Florida Freshman Showcase took place Sunday August 13 and some of the state’s top Freshman assembled to compete against each other. We break down every single player that participated in the event, next up is team 4.
Maya Pinero (Coral Springs Charter School / Miami Suns G Nation ) 5’7 Wing
Pinero played hard, hustling, and running the floor hard! She played with a high activity level and got her hands on a lot of balls via deflections. She can impact the game without the ball in her hands by getting easy baskets in transition, crashing the boards and defending.
Samantha Coble Samantha Coble 5'7" | SF George Steinbrenner | 2027 State FL (George Steinbrenner / Candance Parker Tampa Aces) 5’7 Wing
Coble is a long perimeter player with long leg and a long wingspan. She plays with a quiet demeanor and is a very capable ball handler. I’d like to see her more play more aggressive as she struggled vs aggressive defenders. She played more confident and had the ball in her hands a bit more in the final game and advanced the ball up the court initiating offense and utilizing both her left and right hands. She changes speed and direction and can make entry passes to scorers when at the top of the key and getting team into their offense in the half court.
Natalia Long (Tampa Prep / Candace Parker Tampa Aces) 5’7 Guard
Long is a shifty guard that wants to play 1v1 and off the bounce. She has 3-point range and showcased a step back going both left and right. She is big and strong, and her body allows her to play aggressive and physical. Many of the slender small perimeter players struggled to defend her and keep her out of the paint and away from the rim as Long initiated contact and thrived vs contract and aggressive play. She handled the ball well, finishing in paint, and got to the free throw line.
Mya Greene Mya Greene 5'4" | PG River Ridge | 2027 State FL (River Ridge / Yeti Select) 5’5 Guard
Green is a pesky combo guard who played steady throughout the showcase. She was not overly aggressive, picking her spots selectively on offense and did good job not turning the ball over. At the point guard spot, she fed the ball to playmakers and played unselfish, helping promote ball movement. The ball didn’t stay in her hands too long. She is strong when attacking off the bounce, can take contact and uses her body to shield defenders. As a ballhandler, Greene changed speed and did a good job not turning the ball over.
Audrey Rollins (Nease HS / Duval Elite) 5’4 Guard
Rollins is a small, slender guard who was very active on both ends of the floor. She consistently ran the floor hard and competed every possession. It was enjoyable to see how active she was not just on the offensive end of the floor but the defensive side too. Rollins spaced the floor on the perimeter and was ready to shoot from 3. She is a capable 3-point shooter who can handle the ball with both her left and right. She played more aggressive as she got comfortable towards end of event.
Iliana Dorvilus Iliana Dorvilus 5'3" | SG Cypress Creek | 2027 State FL (Cypress Creek / JSizzles 16U Gold) 5’3 Guard
Dorvilus played with a quiet demeanor at both guard positions. She was aggressive at times and utilized her strong compact build. She did not force anything on the offensive end, playing team ball as a willing screener, passer, and defender. I’d like to see her be more aggressive and play with more energy and passion and find ways to help team without the ball in her hands as she has potential to be an impact player.
Janiya Poole (Lake Mary HS) 5’4 Guard
Poole was quiet through the event. She played a bit passive and when she put the ball to the floor, she went side to side. She is athletic and ran the floor in transition hard and was able to get freed up for easy buckets with her speed and athleticism. Utilizing her athleticism and explosiveness when putting the ball to the floor, could really help her game, going north to south attacking downhill at the rim rather than going east to west.
Mikayla Volcy Mikayla Volcy 5'8" | PF Cardinal Gibbons | 2027 State FL (Cardinal Gibbons / Miami Impact ) 5’8 Forward
Volcy is a strong, thick wing / forward who did not back down versus players that had 2-4 inches on her in the paint. She was one of strongest players on the court and was tough to match up against as not sure if defend her with guard or post. I’d like to see her identify matchups and adjust based on who guards her and use that to her advantage on the offensive end.
Amaya Canady Amaya Canady 6'0" | C Bishop Kenny | 2027 State FL (Bishop Kenny / East Coast United ) 6’0 Forward
Canady was the biggest and strongest post player at the showcase and has mass that makes her a big presence in the paint. She moves well for her a front court player and did an excellent job controlling the offensive and defensive boards. She finished well in the paint and ventured out to 3-point line, showcasing her range. Her ability to finish in the low post and at mid post over her left shoulder was impressive. Canady uses her body, size and shoulders to shield defenders and score over the top of them and draws contact, getting to the free throw line often.
