Sophomore ID Camp Preview: The Coming Out Party

This years's  Sophomore ID Camp will serve asa coming-out party for some of Florida's talented young prospects.    Some will arrive with names that are already familiar, while others will enter the gym looking to introduce themselves to a much larger audience.    A strong performance can change the conversation quickly.     This is an opportunity to compete against talented  pers from across the state, show how much their games have developed, and make a statement heading into the high school season. In this article, we look at several sophomores who have the talent and will more than likely use this stage as their coming-out party.      [player_tooltip player_id='1867765' first='MJ' last='Cole'] is a name you will likely hear a lot more about after the Sophomore ID Camp. Cole plays with a motor that doesn't quit, and she does many of the little things that impact winning. Last season, she may not have led in many statistical categories, but she was a player you consistently saw contributing across the board. At the Reps on Reps Showcase, Cole emerged as a player to watch, and the Sophomore ID Camp feels like the natural next step in her progression. She is savvy attacking the basket, finds ways to score on the drive, and can turn defensive plays into opportunities in transition. Cole is a versatile player who does a little bit of everything, and this could be another opportunity for her to take a step forward.     [player_tooltip player_id='1860635' first='Kennedy' last='Jones'] is a young guard whose time has come. She is fast on the court and plays with intensity from start to finish. Jones already has a lot of skill at this stage of her development and can impact the game on both ends of the floor. She can shoot the three-ball and needs very little space to get her shot off, whether it comes off the catch or the bounce. Jones also scores frequently in transition, with many of those opportunities created by her work on the defensive end. She applies tight pressure to opposing guards, and one mistake can quickly turn into points going the other way. Jones will be a pest defensively at the showcase and could make it a long day for any guard with loose handles. She plays alongside some of the toughest names in the 2027 class and has been patiently waiting for her turn. But make no mistake, Newsome is ready to explode onto the scene, and the Sophomore ID Camp could be her coming-out party. She can score on the block, finish through physical contact, and many times she is the one delivering the contact. Defensively, Newsome is a presence in the middle who can make drivers change their minds—and their shots. She is a beast on the boards and has the size, strength, and physicality to hold her ground when the ball is in the air. Newsome has been waiting for her opportunity, and she looks ready to party at the ID Camp. She is an energizer for her team and does many of the little things that contribute to winning. Milton was part of last year's state championship team. She stepped in when her number was called and played her role to help her team reach the promised land. Milton is a very good defender with the quickness to stay in front of speedy guards and the physicality to mix it up with stronger players. That combination of speed, quickness, and toughness makes her especially impactful on the defensive end. Offensively, Milton can give you baskets in the midrange and create second-chance points off rebounds and putbacks. She is also quick enough to fill the lanes and score in transition. Her offensive game is still developing, but she is already an impactful player in other areas of the court. .Anyone matched up against Milton at the showcase is going to be challenged.     [player_tooltip player_id='1136121' first='Charlee' last='Matos'] is about to introduce herself to the state, and it won't take anything more than simply playing her game. She has been quietly doing her thing on the local level in a rural area, and her name just hasn't become widely known yet. Matos and company made it to the Final Four for the second consecutive season, but lost in the semifinals. That feat still provides a hint of the talent she possesses. When the music starts playing at the ID Camp, the party could get started quickly. She can shoot the three with very little space and knock it down off the catch or off the dribble. Confidence is something Matos has plenty of, and it allows her to play without fear. She can attack the rim, score in transition, and bring a little flair along with her game. Matos turned a lot of heads at the recent Reps on Reps camp with her athleticism and versatile play. She is one of the up-and-coming players in the 2029 class, and after the ID Camp, you will know her name.     [player_tooltip player_id='1279716' first='Kendall' last='Harris'] has the tools to turn the Sophomore ID Camp into a coming-out party. The young guard brings speed, quickness, and an attacking mentality that can immediately grab your attention. At the Flagler Camp last season, Harris walked away with rave reviews. Harris is comfortable with the ball in her hands and uses her handles to create openings and put defenders on their heels. She gave a glimpse of that talent at the Flagler camp, and now she gets another stage to show it. Harris has the skill set to leave the Sophomore ID Camp with a lot more people knowing her name.
