With as many talented players that were on hand at the Prep Girls Hoops Georgia Freshman Showcase, it was a very tough decision on which five would make the final cut for our All-Freshman Showcase Team.
After a bit of deliberation, we were indeed able to find the final five for said team. It consists of three guards and two post players that stood out among what was, indeed, a deeply talented field that was on hand at Marietta’s Next Play 360 sports complex.
Without further adieu, here is our quintet of selections for this year’s All-Georgia Freshman Showcase Team.
Dennis will be a worthwhile addition to a 5A Creekside team that finished with a less-than-memorable 7-18 record in 2022-23. It is one thing to showcase one’s skills as a scorer. It is another to compliment said skills with the ability to pass the ball with efficiency. Dennis’ defense can certainly be counted on – including in iso situations and fuses together speed with a knack for taking care of the ball and limiting turnovers. Throughout the spring and summer, she ran on the club circuit with FBC United Young Gunz. With this 5-foot-4 youngster as part of the Seminoles roster, Creekside’s fortunes are looking upwards.
Highlights
For those that followed this year’s Prep Girls Hoops Circuit – particularly its southeastern-based Triumph Region, this name should ring a bell. She was one of the standout performers back in May at Peach Games and was in midseason form once again in Marietta. Smith was running on the travel circuit with TKO United 3SSB. After establishing a stellar career at the middle school level with Liberty MS, she is ready to bring her numerous talents to the 7A Rams. Among those talents is the ability to take over a game, keep her teammates involved in the flow of said game and display excellent court vision.
When the high school season tips off, Rogers will be joining a Knights team that posted a 27-6 mark in 2022-23. With four seniors having graduated from last season’s St. Francis rendition, Rogers hopes to play her part in filling that void. Rogers may be listed like a 2027 but she possesses the skillset and basketball IQ of a 2024 or 2025. In one of the games she took part in last weekend in Marietta, she placed 27 points on the board. She averaged more than 20 in the three games she took part in at Next Play 360. Rogers has no issues drawing contact, finishing strong at the rim and getting to the free throw line in addition to anticipating passes.
It cannot be said enough about height – it cannot be coached. Henry stands at 5-foot-11 and that height advantage not only comes in handy on the basketball court, but also in volleyball as she is a two-sport athlete. That height also comes in useful in the rebounding game. Those offensive boards can translate into two-point putbacks. Defensively, she also uses her height to her advantage as she is a consistent threat to block shots. Smart passing and ball handling are two of the many other elements to her game Henry places much emphasis on. Henry is poised for an emphatic freshman campaign.
All five of our All-Georgia Freshman Showcase honorees are from metro-Atlanta schools. All of them also hail from a classification no lower than 5A and this star on the rise from 7A McEachern rounds out said list. Edwards will join a McEachern squad that posted a 20-9 season in 2022-23. The 5-foot-10 has participated with Lady True Elite as well as Southern Star on the AAU circuit. McEachern’s team captain last season was a senior big, so Edwards has some large kicks to fill. Between her ability to convert on high-percentage shots in the interior, rebound the ball, and display her willingness to handle the ball and attack the rim, she has the skills necessary to do just that.
