Every year, there will be fresh faces who can help a team reach that next level or play a role on a competitive team. By no means were the names mentioned this week the only newcomers who’ll make a name for themselves, but these are some of the players I liked over the summer and at camps.
Kendall Schmitz Kendall Schmitz 5'4" | PG Manitowoc Lincoln | 2027 WI
The Manitowoc native flies around the floor and does her best to make things happen on both ends. She’s an effort player who takes advantage of any mistake an opposing guard could make. She’s an aggressive lead guard who finds ways to get to the free-throw line and manufacture points at the basket. Her effort on its own will lead to winning. She’ll be someone whom opposing guards dislike playing against.
Mariah Sexton Mariah Sexton 6'3" | PF STMA | 2027 State MN
Sexton is the post-player I have my eyes on in the 2027 class. The Middleton native has the 6-3 that coaches look for, and she plays with physicality. Sexton uses her physicality well without going over the line to be called for offensive fouls. I also think she has more touch to her game than people probably think. She does a solid job powering her way to the rim but does an excellent job finishing through contact with either hand.
Ella Sweeney Ella Sweeney 5'8" | PG Appleton East | 2027 State WI
What I like most about Sweeney’s game is the simplicity of it. Yes, she can create off the dribble and make plays that few others can, but it stems from taking what defenses give her. Sweeney is one of the most intriguing fits at their high school because of the talent that’s at Appleton East. The Patriots have high-end athletes who contributed to one of the best offenses in the FVA, but Sweeney brings the skill to help attack defenses in half-court settings. There’s a chance she could be among the most impactful newcomers in the FVA.
Rowan Counsell Rowan Counsell 5'5" | CG Whitefish Bay | 2027 State WI
Another Whitefish Bay guard, Rowan Counsell Rowan Counsell 5'5" | CG Whitefish Bay | 2027 State WI , is another undersized kid who can make plays off the dribble and disrupt the rhythm of opposing offenses defensively. She’ll have a role to play with the Blue Dukes because of her ability to take care of the ball under pressure. The amount of guards who can handle the ball well at Whitefish Bay creates different lineup possibilities. Those lineups could include Counsell.
