In the article below I am going to highlight some more teams, out of the same 2A class, that could be considered “sleepers”. Teams that, if they display a good connection early on in the season, others will need to be aware of them going into the playoffs.
Thanks for tuning in and enjoy!
Central Lyon High School (24-1)
- After having a big Playoff run a season ago, the Central Lyon Lions will attempt to run it back this season with the some of the same players returning to their roster.
- Saying the loss of Addison Klosterbuer is going to be big is an understatement. A player that had 450+ shot attempts last season alone, is going to have to be replaced by a team effort this season if they want any chance of making a big run once the playoffs start.
- This regular season won’t go as smoothly as last years did because of the issue I brought up above but that doesn’t mean this group can’t come together and win some big games, helping them shake up the 2A State picture.
- I anticipate this team to be one that floats around the Top 10 all season, with the chance to break it at times this winter. If they stay consistent and focus on going 1-0 each game, they will be happy with how their season turns out.
Kuemper Catholic High School (13-9)
- A roster that brings back 4/5 starters from a year ago, including 3 seniors. Not to mention that they have a deep bench that also has experience from previous years at the varsity level.
- This is the definition of a sleeper team. A group that has the personal, coaching, and knowledge to make it far this season in the Playoffs. They just need to put it together a little bit more and learn from their past mistakes. If they can do that early on this season, they will sit around the Top 10 in the 2A class going into the Post season.
- Each game that this team played last season was somewhat competitive. So much so, that the teams PPG differential on the year was +2. If they want to be taken seriously as a contender in this class this season, they will need to hike that number up.
Sibley-Ocheyedan High School (22-4)
- Going 22-4 is no joke throughout your high school varsity season and that is what Sibley-Ocheyedan did last year. They were always in the conversation for being a solid team but no one knew how solid until they killed it at the state tournament.
- This winter they will need to replace 4/5 starters from that run. This will bring up my biggest concern of where will their offensive production come from. If they can solve that issue, it will definitely help in their attempts to make it back to the State Playoff.
- Early on in their season they will be tested and have to demonstrate what this new roster is made of. All eyes will be on these guys. If they can have a great first couple of weeks and ride that momentum into the post season, everyone should watch out around them.
- If I remember correctly this team really dominated the paint in their games last season, bringing them all their success. I’m sure they want to clone that this season but their coaching staff needs to be careful. If they want to be as good as they can be, they will need to adapt their play-style to their roster. Only then can they unlock what everyone can really do.
North Mahaska High School (20-4)
- Coming from a different class can somewhat make things confusing for how well a team will adapt for their upcoming season. I think that North Mahaska is going to have to really try to dominate their regular season schedule in preparation for the 2A Playoffs this winter.
- This team has a star in Breckyn Schilling Breckyn Schilling 5'11" | SF North Mahaska | 2025 State IA and a lot of talent around her, that will stand out once again this season. Something that many forget is that just because of the Class change, the conference and regular season schedule does not. So therefore if they play lesser competition all year, they will have troubles when they face a large 2A team come playoff time. Schilling, who has a handful of college offers, is someone to know in Iowa and she won’t make things easy on her opponents but other teammates will have to step up to help out in the end, if they want to have success right out of the gate.
- I will be making my way out to see this team compete this winter and I hope to see some fireworks. They need to demonstrate that they will kill any competition in their way. If they can do that, game by game, they will hang around the Top 10 rankings all year long.
