Prior to that taking place, the state’s top high school hoops stars are looking to get a final tune-up prior to tip-off.
Alabama will be one of three states hosting a Prep Girls Hoops Top 250 Expo this weekend. Spain Park HS will be the site for Saturday’s festivities. In addition, other Top 250 Expos will emanate from a pair of midwestern states in Nebraska and Wisconsin.
After previewing a few of the state’s seniors, we turn our attention to Alabama’s junior class.
5A Brew Tech in the Montgomery area put together one of its more stellar seasons in recent memory under coach Cynthia Thompson. The Rams posted a 22-10 season and made a deep run in last season’s playoffs – to the 5A semifinal. Baine uses every bit of her 5-foot-10 stature to her advantage. Said height may cause an onlooker to believe she is either a four or a five, but she will display the ball handling and rim attacking capabilities of a one or a two. Baine is unafraid of contact as it can give her and her team chances at the free throw line. She has played at the varsity level ever since she was a seventh grader.

Coalson is a name that rings a bell to us at Prep Girls Hoops. She played her grassroots ball this spring and summer with JSI Elite and made our 16U Second Team at the Triumph Region Finals as part of the Prep Girls Hoops Circuit. Coalson knows how to make plays in the transition game. The quickness she displays as a defender is an attribute to her game that can give opposing offenses problems. A long range jump shot is also part of her overall offensive arsenal. Coalson’s court vision enables her to find driving lanes to the basket and efficiently finish at the rim.

The shade of red that will be sported by Knight will be a bit different in 2023-24. Knight is a transfer a UMS-Wright squad that advanced to the 4A state semifinals last season. She will call 6A Saraland home this season and she is sure to give her new Spartans team a boost. Knight is versatile with the ability to log productive minutes either as a two in the backcourt or as a three in the frontcourt. She played her travel basketball during the spring and summer with Port City Lynx . That versatility certainly comes in handy when boasting the 5-foot-10 stature Knight does.

We conclude our preview of juniors by transitioning from one Sadie to another Sadie. This one has played for a 7A Chelsea team that has established itself as one of the winningest programs in the state throughout the Jason Harlow era. Schwallie’s Hornets finished with a 22-8 record last season. She can be very accurate from 3-point range and the defense she plays enables her to create extra possessions for her team. Schwallie is listed at 5-foot-6. Another strong point of Schwallie’s game is her ability to make things happen in the transition game. She played her travel ball with AL Southern Starz 2025 Robinson.
