That setting is the North Charleston Athletic Center which will once again play host to the SCBCA Girls Elite Camp. It is scheduled for October 8, a day after the Boys Elite Camp emanates from the same venue.
We at Prep Girls Hoops will also be on scene in North Charleston. We begin our preview series of this year’s festivities with the senior class.
Coach Jeff Schaeffer has had plenty of success over the years with his 5A Sumter bunch. He will return his big three of Kiara Croskey Kiara Croskey 5’6″ | PG Sumter | 2024 State SC , Keziyah Sanders Keziyah Sanders 5’4″ | PG Sumter | 2024 State SC and Brown for one last hurrah through the Palmetto State. Among the many attributes that make her valuable to her Gamecocks team is how she can score at all three levels and the ready-to-go attitude she brings evey time her sneakers touch the court. She also does plenty of the little things well – such as hustling for loose balls – that may not show up on the scoresheet but are integral in helping a team win – like Sumter has on plenty of occasions lately.
Standouts from 5A and 4A schools make up the lion’s share of our 2024 SCBCA Girls Elite Camp preview. Ezell calls 5A Boiling Springs home and she will begin this season as her second under coach Leslie Mills. Throughout the AAU season, she runs with FCA Eagles AAU. Ezell is listed at 6-foot-1 and provides quite the interior presence for the Bulldogs. Not only does she convert on high-percentage shot opportunities, but will also bolster a team’s rebounding efforts. Ezell will also make efficient passes from the painted area to a teammate on the open floor and has no problems connecting with jump shots.
Highlights
When thinking about standout 2024s from the Lowcountry, one must not look any further than this standout who represents 4A Bluffton. Similar to Brown, she too also participated in AAU ball with SC Future. Johnson & Wales Charlotte, Lees-McRae and Claflin have all extended offers to Heyward recently. When basketball is on the backburner, Heyward turns her attention to the track and field realm. In 2022-23, Heyward averaged 13.3 points, 6.9 rebounds, four assists and 3.6 steals to lead her Bobcats to a 19-6 record and the second round of last season’s tournament. She is listed at 5-foot-8, thrives as a combo guard and participated in last year’s SCBCA Girls Elite Camp.
We shift our attention to the Midlands for this one and the Silver Foxes of 5A Dutch Fork. Her AAU career included a stint with Palmetto 76ers and, during the offseason, announced that she will play her collegiate ball at Newberry College – a school that has landed a plethora of in-state recruits. Cheeseboro is gifted as a ball handler and understands how to organize an offense in a halfcourt set. She keeps defenses honest with her ability to either drain a 3-point shot or attack the rim. Cheeseboro also has no issues drawing contact and finding her way to the free throw line.
When we say #RecruitThePalmettoState, prospects such as this one from 4A Hartsville certainly come to mind. Frierson is a multi-sport athlete who is also a goalkeeper for the Red Foxes’ soccer team. She took to the court in 27 games last season for a Hartsville team that finished with a 19-8 record last season. Frierson averaged a very robust 20.4 points, 6.1 rebounds, 3.6 assists and three steals per contest. She also achieved a lofty milestone during the 2022-23 campaign as she crossed the 1,000-point threshold for her career. Frierson is listed at 5-foot-6 and thrives as a combo guard.
