If you are going to win games in North Carolina, you must have a strong backcourt who knows how to take care of the ball. Zion more than fits that bill. Zion is an above-average ball handler who knows how to make things happen with the ball in her hands and can get in and out of traffic in a hurry. Zion had what may have been the pass of the day when she found her teammate with a wrap around pass into the post for a score. She has keen awareness of what is going on around her and obviously pays attention to what the defense is giving her. She is great at limiting her turnovers and knows how to slow the game down when needed. She hit a beautiful jumper off the catch and also hit a big three in the 4th. She has very good shot selection and is such a valuable weapon in the Lady Viking backcourt.
Boston really got going late in the game Saturday as she inserted her will to help her team win. She scored on back to back baskets late in the 4th to keep her team within striking distance. She then hit another big three which cut the deficit to three with under a minute left to go in the game. The 4th quarter became her time as she hit some big time shots that kept her team alive. I love the way she continues to be aggressive offensively to go along with the defense that we have grown accustomed to seeing her play.
Miley’s size at the PG position is something you just don’t see every day. She has great vision and she can be seen getting the ball up the floor to her teammates in transition with ease. Her size is so disruptive. She had numerous head-turning plays, including a behind the back dribble through traffic that led to a score. She then followed that up with a buzzer beating three off the glass to end the 1st quarter. She is just so poised and patient and has unreal natural talent. She can utilize the pick and roll and makes the right decision with the basketball in her hands. She hit a nice floater in the lane and reads and reacts to her defenders very well. Really look forward to watching her excel in the the Porter Ridge backcourt as they are bound to give teams a ton of problems.
If there was a PG MVP of the day to be given out, it would certainly go to this Freshman who continues to turn heads. Ashanti is another member of North Carolina’s loaded 2027 class who continues to show how special she is every time she steps on the floor. She is a natural basketball player who showed in today’s contest that she knows how to take over basketball games. She had an absolute stellar performance and nearly carried her team to victory with her determination. She is lightening quick off the dribble and has a strong ability to penetrate the interior. She does not get intimated by bigger defenders as she will find a way to be crafty and score over them. She can get from the top of the key to the rim in a hurry and defenders had a very difficult time staying in front of her. She is very good at using her footwork to attack the basket and keeps defenders on their heels. She has the mentality that every coach wants out of its players and has that “refuse-to-lose” attitude to her game. She had a play where she crossed over the help defender after the pick and roll which led to an easy basket. Ashanti provides the “wow” moments in games that you don’t see often from Freshman. Ashanti is well on her way to becoming the best player in all of Union County and that is saying a lot for county that has top level talent on a yearly basis.
