The class of 2024 was the first to be adjusted as these seniors are already into their last high school season. Let’s take a look at some of the shooting guards from the group.
Tamia Darden is a strong ball handler being able to create her own plays making some space for her to go to work and show off her shot. She knows how to get down low protecting the possession, and she elevates up high over her opponents to score some points. Her toughness is apparent on the other end, too, being able to guard a range of players protecting the basket.
Highlights
Zaria Gool is so quick on the court. When handling the ball, she can blow by her opponents attacking the basket with ease. When she relocates off the pass, she loses her defenders being ready to go to work off the pass. On defense, she’s aggressive jumping in front of passing lanes and going after loose balls. You can tell she just has the confidence to get every 50/50 ball.
Julie Janus has the shiftiness of a guard and the toughness of a post player. You can even see that with the way she can score on a fast break even if she has to change up her speed, back up her defender to the block, turn, and score off the glass. Her shot is always consistent around the perimeter, and she doesn’t need the open look as she can shoot with hands in her face. Lucky for us North Carolinians, she recently announced her commitment to Catawba.
Alissa Cheek is crafty with her moves to put up her shot around the arc. She can use some jab steps losing her defender without a dribble, or she can put the ball on the court changing directions to create her own space. She sees the floor well, too, being able to find her open teammates making adjustments to get the pass inside to them. She plays tough on the other end of the court as well stripping the ball away from her opponents and scoring off of these turnovers.
