The actual skill-set of the player and their position change over time but something that reminds constant is the production that they bring to the table. Below I cover five individuals that have produced great numbers to start this season. Each of these players are either ranked in the Top 5 for Scoring or Rebounding throughout the state going into winter break.
Thanks for tuning in and enjoy!
Taryn Ottemann Taryn Ottemann 5’11” | PF Johnson Brock | 2025 State NE has started off her season at the Forward position with a bang. Throughout her teams first five games, Ottemann is averaging 20.8 PPG and 7.3 RPG. Ottemann is sound. Other then her ability to score and rebound, she has also shown discipline on the defensive end, resulting in a 2 BPG average. She is smart enough to use her size whenever the opportunity presents itself and has demonstrated that she can finish through contact. Her mixture of force, balance, and vision makes Ottemann a difficult player to guard for a lot of teams. If they end up trying to double team her in the post, she usually does good job of seeing the floor and making an accurate pass out to an open teammate. For the most part this season though, she hasn’t had to do that. She has been scoring efficiently and doing it in short periods of time. As her coach, you can’t ask for much better production than that. This 2025 Class is full of talent at every position and Ottemann has been one of the best at the Forward spot going into break this season, there is no doubt about it.
The only reason that Abriya Watkins Abriya Watkins PG Omaha Northwest | 2027 NE is still on the WL in this situation is because I haven’t had the opportunity to see her play in person yet and I didn’t want to inaccurately place her but from everything I do have to go on, she produces at a high rate and looks extremely coordinated while doing it. Watkins is a PG/SG type player, that can get you a lot of buckets in a hurry. To start this season she is averaging 17 PPG and 5 RPG. A part of this is due to her teams intense full-court pressure and part of it is due to her ability in the front of that pressure to judge when the opponent is going to make a weak pass, leading to an easy steal and layup. As a group, Omaha Northwest hasn’t started off their season exactly like they wanted to but they are going to go into break and regroup. 2024 is a new year and a time where they can start off on a much better note.
Taya Pinneo Taya Pinneo 5’4″ | PG Shelby-Rising City | 2025 NE of Shelby-Rising City has been a standout for her team ever since she started high school. Pinneo maybe a smaller guard but she plays a big game. Her best ability would be shooting the ball in my opinion but the reason she gets open is what is actually important. What I mean by that is, her movement off of the ball is fantastic. After she passes, she does a great job at moving away from the play to spread the floor. If she receives it back, she is always locked and loaded to shoot with a wide stance and balanced shot. Most of the shots that I see her make are off of a quick catch but she isn’t afraid to let it go off of the dribble either. Pinneo has been averaging around 17 PPG this season on 43% shooting. If she can keep this up and everyone else around her takes care of their matchup, this Huskies team could finish over .500 before things are all said and done at the end of the 2023-2024 season.
If you want to talk about a player out of Nebraska that has been a rebounding machine this season look no further then Gavin Gilmore Gavin Gilmore 5’9″ | SF Hampton | 2025 NE of Hampton High School. Gilmore, a 5’8 Forward, lives in the painted area and she works really well off of the glass. On a regular basis, Gilmore is flashing to an open spot near the hoop, looking for a board. If it happens to be on the offensive side, she has demonstrated good enough touch to put it back up-and-in on her first try a majority of the time. If it’s on defense, she has good enough skill and vision to either hit her outlet or she can even bring it down the floor herself at certain times. Throughout her Hawks first eight games, Gilmore is averaging 10 PPG and 11.8 RPG. At this pace she is going to end her Junior season averaging a double-double. Something that is pretty impressive. The ultimate goal is for her to be producing these numbers while her team is winning, so that will be the next part of the puzzle. Figuring it all out maybe a tough task but it’s also very do-able if you ask me.
Reece Mlady Reece Mlady 5’8″ | SG Blue Hill | 2025 State NE is a solid athlete all around. It doesn’t matter if she is stepping on the court to play Volleyball or if she is lacing up on the hardwood to play Basketball. To start off this season, Mlady is one of the top rebounders throughout the state of Nebraska in the 2025 Class. She is currently averaging just under 8 PPG and just over 11 RPG. These two numbers have been consistent and it has helped her team play some competitive games these first couple of weeks. Mlady stands at 5’9 and other than being athletic, she has a high motor. She seems to never stop moving and she is always fighting for the ball until the whistle blows. I’ll be in to see this Blue Hill team this season. They have some players that are interesting on the court. I think with the right guidance and system, Mlady could thrive but I need to see her play in person before I make that decision so I can’t wait to see how things play out moving forward.
