Said event was the Carolina Clash, hosted by Carolina Girls Hoops Report. What made the get-together unique was that it welcomed teams from neighboring states such as South Carolina and Tennessee as well as the expected fare from the Hoop State. The Palmetto State’s Legacy Early College and the Volunteer State’s Clarksville Christian were the out-of-state assemblings that were on hand.
After watching the three varsity games that took place in the Charlotte suburbs, we give recognition to those who particularly stood out among the crowd this past weekend.
Once this season is over, Holloway will be sporting similar colors to those she wears now at Legacy Early College. Holloway is set to trade in the gold and purple of the Lions for the blue and maize at Michigan. Her team began this year’s CGHR Carolina Clash with a very entertaining victory over Clarksville Christian – a 43-40 result. Holloway finished with 15 points and took home co-MVP honors. She was especially instrumental in spearheading Legacy Early College’s efforts from behind the 3-point line as she drained three 3-pointers to add to her team’s offensive output. Holloway got in a bit of foul trouble late but still managed to make her mark on Friday evening’s contest.
Cameron’s high school career has included stops at a pair of 4A schools – SCISA’s Trinity Collegiate and South Florence within the high school league ranks. As a senior, Cameron is now playing her one and only season with the Lions. She too managed to tally 15 points in what was a winning Legacy Early College effort to dispatch of a very tough Clarksville Christian bunch. The Centurions defense particularly had few answers for Cameron when she was looking to attack the rim and she has no problems drawing contact to get to the free throw line. Her versatility shows itself in her ability to play either of the guard positions in the backcourt or in the frontcourt as a three.
Lauren Hassell
Lauren Hassell
Hassell is a 2027 that many basketball fans will be hearing plenty of over the next several years. There is a reason why she is one of the freshmen on ESPN’s watchlist. Not to mention this past season on the AAU circuit she was playing on Tennessee Sol United’s 17U team. Hassell showcased on Friday night many of the talents that have increased her rising national profile. She scored 16 points to lead her Centurions squad into what was a tough battle against South Carolina-based Legacy Early College. In addition, Hassell stands at 6-foot-3 and that comes in very useful when looking to do work on the boards. Scoring on her is particularly difficult as she effectively uses her length to reject an opponent’s shot attempt. Hassell is the textbook definition of “just getting started.”
There is a very robust youth movement throughout the Carolinas and few teams exemplify that more than the Knights of Northside Christian. Gaskin’s Knights may have been on the receiving end of a 48-45 decision to a tough 1 of 1 Prep assembling, but she managed to keep Northside Christian in the contest from start to finish. Gaskin concluded Saturday afternoon’s game having scored 13 points. She stands at 6-foot-3 and will convert on many a high-percentage shot opportunity. She may be an eighth-grader but she plays with the skillset of a seasoned veteran. If this is what she resembles and she is only in her first season of varsity ball – look out, Hoop State.
This year’s CGHR Carolina Clash at Jay M. Robinson HS featured a good mix of standout veterans and standout youngsters. Fritz was one of the veteran stars that shined brightly at the 3A Bulldogs’ home court this past weekend. Her 1 of 1 Prep team was locked in a tight contest against a formidable foe in Northside Christian. Fritz tallied 17 points to lead all scorers for that game. She particularly keyed 1 of 1 Prep’s efforts from behind the 3-point line as she drained five of her tries from downtown. With the success she was having behind the arc, one had to assume that if the ball left her hands from 3-point land, she would strike paydirt. She can play productive minutes as either a guard or a wing. Fritz is listed at 5-foot-8 and has offers from Montreat, Randolph Macon and Kenyon College.
Highlights
Grace Christian was one of the final two teams to take the court at this year’s CGHR Carolina Clash. Roman ensured that the trip back to Sanford would be a triumphant one as her 16 points she put on the board spearheaded the Crusaders’ efforts in a 56-39 victory vs. Clarksville Christian out of Tennessee. What especially made a difference was having the hot hand from behind the 3-point line as she made four of the team’s five successful 3-pointers. Along with giving the team a long range element to an offense, she has no problems attacking the rim, understands when to pass and when to score and will get to the free throw line.
Nevaeh Brooks
Nevaeh Brooks
Brooks’ Clarksville Christian assembling may have departed from Jay M. Robinson HS with a pair of losses to a pair of tough teams from the Carolinas, but she saved her best for last at CGHR Carolina Clash. Brooks tallied 11 points to lead the Crusaders against a tough Grace Christian team on Saturday. Brooks can be counted on to make efficient and accurate passes to her teammates and will create additional offensive possessions with the steals she collects. She also can be accurate from behind the 3-point line and will also give her team production at the free throw line on the heels of drawing contact.
