The five prospects that we are going to highlight below are all individuals that have been producing at a steady rate for their perspective varsity team to kick off this season. Each player is someone out of the 2027 Class that has started off their high school career’s in an eye-opening way.
Thanks for tuning in and enjoy!
When I had the chance to sit down and watch Katie Muller Katie Muller 6’0″ | SG Dowling Catholic | 2027 State IA this season, both times she was a standout for her Dowling Catholic High School team. If you know anything about this program and their history, you would know the Katie has an older sister on the team and she seems comes from a family with a lot of length. She may only be a Freshman but she stands at 5’11 with a Guard-like skill set. Offensively, she has her natural size combined with fundamental skill while attacking her defenders. Defensively, she has the ability to move from the wing spot to the forward position if need be, depending what her team is asking of her. Playing both spots efficiently. At this moment in time, for Muller being one of the better 2027 players throughout the state of Iowa, she still is very raw on the court with a lot of room to grow. In the two games that I was in attendance for, Muller excelled at shooting the ball from deep off of the catch. At this point in the season, this ability to shoot seems like her best but over the next year or so, I wouldn’t be surprised if she expands her entire game to become a great overall player and a future collegiate commit.
Highlights
Maryn Franken Maryn Franken 6’0″ | SF Sioux Center | 2027 State IA is going to be a Top 10 player in this Class before you know it. Franken is the “can do it all” type player that coaches love, while being a steady producer at any position she is placed at on the floor. Franken is a 6’0 Combo Forward at the high school level. She could really play any position asked of her but she excels at the 3 and 4 spot. This season throughout her Sioux Center team’s first 10 games, Franken is averaging 11.5 PPG on 45% shooting, 8 RPG, 3 APG, and 1.8 BPG. Her team is currently sitting at a 5-5 record as they are still trying to find themselves after winning a State Championship last year. Something that is not always the easiest thing to do, especially when you are trying to fit a very skilled Freshman into your lineup. Over these next four years, this Sioux Center team is going to be a State contender again and Franken is going to be a big reason for that. She is already making her presence known and I’m hoping that continues moving forward.
The North Polk Comets are setting themselves up for success early on this season. Throughout their first 12 games, they are sitting with a 10-2 overall record, 9-0 in conference. If you want a chance at a state title you need a perfect mixture within your program of fundamental coaching, Senior leadership, 2-3 star players, a selfless team as a whole, and much much more. One of their talents from the 2027 Class making their mark so far this season comes in the form of Combo Guard – Campbell Schulz Campbell Schulz 5’9″ | CG North Polk | 2027 State IA . Schulz has always produced in one way or another. Whether it’s scoring the ball, rebounding, or defending, you know what you are going to get with her and that’s been on full display to start off this winter. She is averaging 5-6 PPG, 3-4 RPG, and 2-3 APG. On a team that has multiple collegiate commits/level players, to see the floor and put up some of these numbers is note-worthy. I expect that Schulz’s play-style is only going to get better with the more experience she has. If she stays in love with the game and continues to learn things from a strategic standpoint, she is going to have a high school career to remember.
Length. Vision. Athleticism. Smarts. These are just some of the words that I would use to describe the type of game that I have seen out of Hayden McLaughlin Hayden McLaughlin 5’11” | SF Algona | 2027 IA so far. McLaughlin is 5’11 and a hooper. Someone that wants to compete and beat you more than anything else. To start off her Freshman season, McLaughlin is demonstrating her skill-set to its fullest. She is knocking down shots from all three levels on the floor, she is defending big and small opponents, and she is hustling each and every possession. It’s early on but this is the type of player that could really turn into a high end prospect down the road. She possesses all the intangibles to physically dominate, she can shoot it from anywhere, she is coordinated, she is never satisfied, and she communicates well. Add those together and you get a heck of a player at any level. This Algona Bulldogs team has some pieces. They have 3-4 players that have demonstrated productive skill in their own right. If they can all stick together and slowly continue to learn from their past mistakes, they could make a run this post season.
Productivity should never be under-appreciated and someone that has been productive on an undefeated team so far this winter is Emma Truesdell Emma Truesdell 5’9″ | SF Roland Story | 2027 IA of Roland Story. Truesdell is a 5’9 Combo Guard/Small Forward and a good one at that. To kick off her Freshman year, Truesdell is scoring 5 PPG, grabbing 4 RPG, and dishing out 1.5 APG. All while playing stout and physical defense. When you evaluate most young players, they usually have an ability that they are great at. Something that stands out from their skill-set above the rest but in this case, Truesdell is pretty even across the board. She makes good plays, doesn’t force action, and she sticks with her given assignment. As a coach, you couldn’t ask for much more. This Roland Story team is legit. I hope they can keep winning as we come out of break and moving into the Playoffs in a few short weeks.
