Without a true floor general running the show it can be extremely difficult to execute effectively on offense. Conversely, a great point guard can make all the difference in the world. Having just watched Maddyn Greenway Maddyn Greenway 5'8" | PG Providence Academy | 2026 State MN of Providence Academy go up against Addison Mack Addison Mack 5'9" | PG Minnehaha Academy | 2025 State MN of Minnehaha Academy on Tuesday night, that was obvious. Ditto for any time we watch Liv McGill Liv McGill 5'7" | CG Hopkins | 2024 State MN of Hopkins, the Florida commit who might be the best of a very good trio.
Yesterday we told you about Abbie Pietila Abbie Pietila 5'8" | PG Delano | 2026 State MN , the standout PG from Delano who topped our list of stock risers from this past weekend. Had we not profiled Abbie there, she most certainly would have been included here. Pietila was the epitome of just how much influence a great point guard can have. She is a huge reason why Delano entered the week with a perfect record. The same holds true for any of the point guards included in our story on high-major players who delivered at Granite City – such luminaries as Chloe Johnson Chloe Johnson 5'11" | PG Duluth Marshall | 2028 MN , Jordan Ode Jordan Ode 5'11" | CG Maple Grove | 2025 State MN , Tori Oehrlein Tori Oehrlein 5'10" | CG Crosby-Ironton | 2026 State MN and the aforementioned Greenway and McGill.
Here are some other point guards who performed at a high level at the Breakdown Granite City Classic.
Elisabeth Gadient Elisabeth Gadient 5'10" | CG Goodhue | 2024 State MN – 2024, Goodhue (MSU-Mankato)
Liz had quite the weekend. The MSU-Mankato commit, who is ranked #22 in the Prep Girls Hoops Class of 2024, went head-to-head with two of Minnesota’s best and emerged victorious. On Friday, Gadiant’s 16 points helped Goodhue to a comeback win over Mountain Iron-Buhl which is led by another great one in North Carolina commit Jordan Zubich Jordan Zubich 5'11" | SG Mountain Iron-Buhl | 2024 State MN . On Saturday, Gadient’s 32-point performance sparked the Wildcats to an 83-64 defeat of Crosby-Ironton despite the elite efforts of Oehrlein. The 5’10 Gadient is long, athletic, creative and highly poised. She’s averaging over 22 points per game.
Alexis Rose Alexis Rose 5'10" | CG Becker | 2024 State MN – 2024, Becker (University of Sioux Falls)
As PGH scout Ally McGinnis so astutely observed while watching Lexi play, one of her legs is noticeably smaller in diameter and muscle development than the other. That kind of atrophy happens routinely when you miss a year with a torn ACL. It will take time for that discrepancy to resolve itself, but it has taken no time at all for the 5’10 point guard’s game to recover. The Sioux Falls commit is a stud! On Friday, she led Becker to a huge 56-55 comeback win over Duluth Marshall. On Saturday, her 20-point performance sparked the Bulldogs to a 71-64 defeat of Hancock. The top 30 senior is averaging over 18 ppg.
Gabby Betton Gabby Betton 5'9" | CG Lakeville North | 2024 State MN – 2024, Lakeville North (Loyola-Maryland)
There are solid point guards with next-level potential, and then there are Division 1-caliber floor generals. Betton, who is heading for Loyola University in Baltimore this fall, is definitely a D1 athlete. She has speed, skill and smarts, and is a high-motor competitor who gives you everything every game. This weekend Betton scored 14 points to lead Lakeville North to a win over a tough White Bear Lake squad. On Saturday, Betton had 18 against Wayzata in a tough loss against a very, very good opponent. Ranked #14 in the PGH Minnesota Class of 2024, Gabby is averaging over 13 points per game.
Sophie Hawkinson Sophie Hawkinson 5'8" | CG Wayzata | 2025 State MN – 2025, Wayzata
There’s a lot on Sophie’s shoulders this year as she takes over the point guard position at Wayzata from a long line of standouts who have gone on to do great things at the collegiate level. The transition was a little rough around the edges on opening weekend a month ago. Fast forward to this past weekend and we saw Sophie at her best, performing at the elite level we have become accustomed to in AAU. The 5’8 junior, ranked #10 in the Class of 2025, was firing on all cylinders against Minot and scored 20 points in the win. She was very good against Lakeville North, too, in a Trojan victory. Nobody competes harder than Hawkinson, who is averaging about 12 points per game.
Kaitlyn Rohloff Kaitlyn Rohloff 5'8" | PG Hancock | 2025 State MN – 2025, Hancock
The 5’8 junior led her team to the Class A state title as a youngster, playing with poise beyond her years and grace under pressure. Now a junior, the 33rd-ranked prospect in the Class of 2025 is the consummate floor leader. We’ve seen Rohloff (pictured above) a few times already this season and what you see is what you get pretty much every time out. She’s steady, smooth and savvy. On Friday Kaitlyn directed the Owls to a 58-46 win over a strong Holdingford squad. On Saturday she went head-to-head with Alexis Rose Alexis Rose 5'10" | CG Becker | 2024 State MN in a great match-up of D2-level standouts. Becker may have prevailed but Kaitlyn reminded us why she is one of the best in Class A.
Maggie Fricke – 2026, Minot ND
Maggie and her teammate LeeLee Bell are accustomed to making the 500-mile drive each way to the Twin Cities where both play AAU basketball for Minnesota teams in the spring and summer. This was the first time we’ve watched the dynamic duo here with their high school team and it was a ton of fun. Minot is dominant in North Dakota and Maggie is as competitive as they come. The 5’8 sophomore, who’s ranked #2 in North Dakota behind Bell, has only one gear: wide open, full throttle and in your face. She had 15 points facing Hawkinson on Friday and 23 against McGill on Saturday. This mid-major prospect is legit.
PGH scout Ally McGinnis contributed to these evaluations.
