Despite the final score, things were not so one-sided in the first half of the Class 3A State Championship game on Saturday at Williams Arena. Benilde-St. Margaret's got off to a hot start, but the Islanders of DeLaSalle were right there with them. Five minutes into the contest, the Red Knights' [player_tooltip player_id='177728' first='Olivia' last='Olson'] had tallied 9 of her team's 15 points, while things were spread more evenly for DeLaSalle.

Things went back and forth for the rest of the half, with players gassed from fast-paced play, the lack of stoppages in the game, and the rigors of playing on the bigger college court. By the end of the half there had been five ties and eight lead changes between the two teams. BSM was up 44-39.

The second half was a different story. The Islanders came out attacking, determined to close the gap. A fast break and-one play by [player_tooltip player_id='296527' first='Aneisha' last='Scott'] pushed DeLaSalle to within 2 points, but immediately afterward the Islanders went cold and were unable to hit shots of any kind. DLS was held at 46 points for six and half minutes. Meanwhile Benilde pushed on, growing their lead to 15 points. DeLaSalle never recovered and the final score was 81 to 58.

A major factor in the Red Knights success was limiting the touches of Islanders forward [player_tooltip player_id='595567' first='Jordyn' last='Johnson']. Standing at 6 foot 2, and possessing an immense amount of strength, Johnson dominates the paint on a nightly basis. Luckily for Benilde, Olson did a tremendous job with the defensive assignment.

MOST VALUABLE PLAYER

[player_tooltip player_id='177728' first='Olivia' last='Olson'] – 2024 guard, Benilde-St. Margaret's (Michigan)

The McDonald's All American ended her high school career with a bang, leading her team to their second state championship in a row, topping the 30-point mark in all three tournament games. The accolades of Olson's career go on and on. She scored over 2,000 career points, rewriting the Benilde-St. Margaret's record book in the process.. This month she was named Minnesota's Gatorade Player of the Year, as well as a finalist for Ms. Basketball. This spring she will play in the All-American Girls Game, the Nike Hoops Summit, and the Jordan Brand Classic.

Olson was recruited by countless big-time college programs, ultimately committing to Michigan in her junior year. At the time of her signing, Liv was Michigan's second-highest ranked recruit in program history, just behind freshman classmate Syla Swords (New York). In 2021, she won a gold medal with Team USA's U16 team at the FIBA U16 Women's Americas Championship; she was one of three 15-year-olds on the team. Olson's career has been nothing short of remarkable and she went out on top with another display of brilliance.

BREAKOUT PERFORMER

[player_tooltip player_id='208184' first='Zahara' last='Bishop'] – 2025 guard, Benilde-St. Margaret's

The junior guard stepped up big-time for the Red Knights, not only in the state tournament, but throughout the season. Bishop, the 18th-ranked prospect in the Prep Girls Hoops Class of 2025, put up 18 points in both the quarter and semifinals, as well 11 points, 5 rebounds, and 6 assists in the championship game against DeLaSalle. Zahara has become a more aggressive scorer for her team in recent months, particularly during the first six weeks of the season when Olson was out with a broken hand. The injury was suffered just minutes into the first game of the year and required major surgery. During Olivia's absence, Bishop took over the leadership role for her team, as well as the bulk of the scoring averaging nearly 19 points per game. The confidence gained, and aggressiveness shown, carried over into the most important game of the season. Zahara made it just that much more obvious why she is a solid D1 prospect.
