The 17U and 16U national teams are particularly intriguing to me and are going to be difficult to beat. Let’s take a look at some of the ball handlers from these teams.
Taylor Smith had a strong season with Concord Academy, and she is certainly going to continue handling the ball well moving into the travel season. She does a nice job controlling the tempo knowing when to set up offensive sets or take advantage of outnumbering her defenders. She can make the nice pass in between defenders hitting her teammates right where they need the ball to score. She reads her opponents well, too, jumping the pass to grab the steal.
Emma Montanari is continuing to lead her East Lincoln team in the playoffs packing the stat sheet with her ability to make plays. She has a way of getting to the rim rolling the ball off her fingertips with ease, and she sees the floor so well knowing exactly when to time her passes hitting her teammates right in the hands. Her finesse handling the ball translates well to defense being able to pick the pocket of her opponents, and she certainly takes advantage scoring off of these turnovers.
Alana Hankerson was exceptional handling the ball for her 1 of 1 Prep team this past year always keeping her eyes peeled and knowing the next play to make. She is constantly moving both with and without the ball shifting the defense and finding the open lane or teammate. She can definitely knock down her own shot from deep, and she has no trouble attacking the basket.
Mary Church is a new addition to the Lady Attack Elite team. She had a strong season with East Rowan doing everything a guard needs to do from handling the ball, knocking down shots, and making sharp passes. She makes effective cuts getting to the open space, and she stays ready to put up her shot off the pass. She can use her length on defense knocking the ball away and even stepping in front of her opponents to block some shots.
