Alexis Bordas Alexis Bordas 5'8" | SG Wheeling Park | 2025 State WV entered the day eight 3s and 38 points short of breaking two AAAA single game records, she left the game with said points and treys. Bordas showed off a shot that needs very little daylight, the ability to stretch the floor, and a quick and sharp shooting eye with limited time to view the rim in the Patriots’ 63-56 win over AAAA surprise Huntington. Bordas began her assault with a triple at the 4:01 mark in the opening period, then she never let up the rest of the way. Her shot came out quick, her feet squared up with the basket, and her shot came out at the same mark every single time. The thing I like most about Bordas this season? She continues to show a great feel for her shot and a willingness to let it rip when her team needs her the most. There is no situation she can’t handle on the offensive end of the floor. Listen to the testimony of teammate LaLa Woods, “She knows she’s a good player. She knows she can score the ball. If she’s hot, she’s going to keep scoring because we need that,” Woods said.
LaLa Woods, Wheeling Park, PG, 5-8, Jr. – Record setter, too! LaLa Woods trailed Huntington’s Dionna Gray by nine assists for the AAAA single-game record, she helped herself to the needed dimes, and then some. Woods cemented herself in state tournament history and made the record a little harder to break with her semifinal performance against Huntington. Woods displayed excellent court vision and a wonderful feel in getting her teammates the basketball with an 11-assist performance. All morning, Woods set her teammates up for good shots versus a Highlanders team keen on pulling off another upset. If you don’t believe my take, just listen to her teammate Alexis Bordas Alexis Bordas 5'8" | SG Wheeling Park | 2025 State WV . “Every game, she knows what to do. She’s always making the right play. She’s a winner and she does all the things she needs to do to win,” Bordas said after the win over Huntington. Coaches who need a one that can make it happen should take a look at Woods at the one.
Sofia Wassick Sofia Wassick 5'7" | PG Morgantown | 2024 State WV , Morgantown, PG, 5-8, Sr. – Wassick took over the game. Simple as that. In a semifinal against top-seeded George Washington, Wassick did what Wassick does best on the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center floor. Facing her possible last game as a Mohigan, she galvanized her group. It started with her play on the floor. She got her teammates involved at every level of the offense and defense. On her own, she used her fast hands and quick thinking on the defensive end to generate several needed turnovers as Morgantown worked their way back from a 13-point halftime deficit. When it was all said and done, she tallied 17 points on 50% percent shooting, and seven boards.
Kayli Kellogg Kayli Kellogg 5'9" | SG Morgantown | 2027 WV , Morgantown, G, 5-4, Fr. – Brrrrrrrrrr. Ice Water. Tasked with holding the GW Patriots comeback attempt at bay, Kayli Kellogg Kayli Kellogg 5'9" | SG Morgantown | 2027 WV repeatedly gave her opponents the coldest of shoulders. She stepped to the line and sunk the comeback hopes as she canned four free throws in the last 14 seconds. She punished GWs attempts to stop the clock twice. After Zellous brought GW within two points, Kellogg punched the lead back up to four. Shortly after another Zellous tip-in, she sunk the final shots that won the Mohigans the contest. Overall, she tallied a team-high 18 points and added on 7 boards. The thing I liked most about Kellogg in the closing moments was her poise as she stepped to the free-throw line. She simply took a deep breath and let her shots fly without so much as a hesitant moment. It looks like she is working on growing into someone who can be counted on when the moments get big and the lights are bright.
Mary Beth Meadows, James Monroe, PG, 5-6, Sr. – Meadows showed an incredible courage to step up when her team needed her the most in possibly her last game at the high school level. She created a lot of problems for a Cameron team looking to keep the Mavericks from pulling off another upset. The thing I liked about her the most is her fearlessness in the face of one of the best defensive teams in Class A. She tallied 22 points, 3 steals and four rebounds in the loss.
