The last few seasons have been incredibly lucrative for 5A Northern Colorado girls basketball teams and players. The latest two state championships have come from the north and half the teams in both the elite 8 and final 4 came from the northern I-25 corridor. A big part of this surge has been because of players that can fill it up on the scoreboard such as the highlighted athletes below. Let's check it out...

There are not many bigger names in Northern Colorado basketball than [player_tooltip player_id='566365' first='Kyla' last='Hollier'], and she can straight light-up the scoreboard from all over the court. Kyla enters her junior year a two-time state champ and the leader of a Roosevelt team that while different, has the talent to make another deep run. One of the major differences for the Roughriders is that Hollier and fellow returning 5A first team all-state teammate, [player_tooltip player_id='346832' first='Ryanne' last='Bahnsen-Price'], will have to carry much more of the scoring load. The good news is that Kyla is more than capable and I expect her to absolutely dominate. Exemplified by her 471 points last season - She is unstoppable with good position inside, gets to the charity stripe with consistency, and has the outside touch to increase her 3 pointers made this season. Mark my words - Kyla is going to be one of the top scorers in the entire state of Colorado this year.

Izzy is a big-time player that carried the lion-share of the scoring load for Silver Creek last season. She finished with an eye-popping 392 points in the 2023/2024 season - For perspective no other Silver Creek Raptor player was even close to the 200 point mark. Izzy was also one of a handful of players in the entire state to record 50 made threes. After a great club season with [program_tooltip program_id='712413' first='BC' last='Denver'] that provided many next level opportunities - Spagnoletti committed this fall to play at Fort Hays State University. With the pressure of finding the right college off the table, expect Izzy to play care-free basketball and dominate even more as a senior.

Sophia came on the varsity scene as a freshman last season and immediately turned heads with her incredible numbers. She averaged an impressive 16ppg while shooting a red hot 57% from two point range. Strength, power, and control are all staples of Sophia's game. Carbajal has a knack for getting great position inside by sealing off defenders and catching the basketball in great position to finish. Anytime a player is able to put up scoring numbers like this as a freshman, it only demonstrates the tremendous future potential to come in the following years. Look for her to be one of the top scorers in Northern Colorado.

As told by many Northern Colorado coaches, Madi is one of the best kept hidden secrets in the state. She averaged an assertive 16ppg as a junior for Greeley Central - All while being doubled, even triple teamed at times because of her potent scoring ability. Madi's quick release from deep allows her to make defenders that give her any space, pay dearly, while blowing by those that try to pressure. Also, although slight in stature, Madi finishes really consistently at the rim, often using her sneaky hesitation move to cruise by defenders. Already with a great junior year under her belt and an offer from Northeastern Junior College, I expect Madi's scoring, as well as her recruiting, to pick up during her senior campaign.

Reyleigh is a proven winner and seasoned vet when it comes to high school basketball. She is a wing player that has nice touch from both 3 point range and mid-range, but is surprisingly physical inside as well. The true mark of a high level scorer is both the ability to get easy baskets and the consistency to do it game-in and game-out. Hess shot a staggering 119 free-throws last season, a stat that directly shows how aggressively she plays around the rim. After a great summer with [program_tooltip program_id='712527' first='Hardwood' last='Evolution'] she enters her senior year blooming with confidence - Physically stronger and division 1 committed (California Baptist) - Watch out for Reyleigh and the Windsor Wizards to make a serious title run this season, and for Hess to score a boatload of points while doing it.
