Goodpasture Lady Cougars: Road to Championship Success

Not that you have to be lucky. Just the word luck. Google defines luck as success or failure brought by chance rather than through one's action. See, in the game of basketball, everything you do matters. How you prepare. Your mindset and staying laser focused. Of course, you have to be able to do the intangible things at a high rate such as knock down shots, rebound, and defend. When I tell you that this past year, Goodpasture Lady Cougars didn't make it to the finals by chance, it was their mindset from Day 1, blocking out all the noise, and staying laser focused on their quest to the finals. Let me explain.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>If you don't know by now, Goodpasture took USJ into 3 OTs before eventually falling in the final game. People all over the place never would or didn't have them even going that far. They were too small, didn't have the horses, just a so so private school on the north side of Nashville. So many naysayers out there, but besides those within that locker room, they were locked in and loaded, believing what could be. Last summer, the girls put in a lot of work, bought into coach Taylor Clay's system, and just went out and improved all around. Results? A 25-4 overall record, 11-1 in the district, and a state finals appearance. Not bad for a squad that had tons of youth.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>See, in this game, you have to have belief, work hard each and every day, and uphold accountability for one another. This squad, this program, does just that. I personally have no ties with this program, but from the outside looking in, you can tell that these kids love the game and will fight tooth and nail for each other on every possession. They are truly fun to watch. They get after it on defense. They hunt great shot attempts on offense. They can create off the dribble, and just wow you with their style of play. They bring a balanced attack to the court and everyone stars in their role. That's the beauty of the team. Selfless individuals who go out and compete and do so with tons of energy.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>This upcoming season, Goodpasture is definitely heavy favorites in a lot of categories.&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:list {"ordered":true} --> <ol class="wp-block-list"><!-- wp:list-item --> <li>To win their district.</li> <!-- /wp:list-item --> <!-- wp:list-item --> <li>To make it back to state.</li> <!-- /wp:list-item --></ol> <!-- /wp:list --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>They have a loaded roster of girls who gained valuable experience from last year's run. They have a favorable schedule and will have a tough non-conference schedule to get them ready to compete. Lastly, they have the mindset and know what it takes to get back to the big dance. Don't think these girls took their opportunity for granted. They are pumped and ready to get back at it and make another go for the gold ball trophy. A heady floor general who has tight handles, sensational court vision, and creates off the bounce. Can score it from multiple levels on the floor, but has an innate ability to find the hot hand, delivering the ball in a timely manner. She is a dawg on the defensive end. Getting steals and deflections, leading to transitional buckets. Just like her teammates, she has some unfinished business to attend to and she is on a mission. Look for her to have an outstanding senior season as her stock continues to rise. The Little engine that could. She is the fuel that makes this team go. Don't let the size fool you. This kid is a ball player. A dual sport athlete who can shoot from anywhere at a high clip. She is shifty, can spot up on the arc, has a beautiful shot release where the ball finds the bottom of the net. This kid is fearless and plays the game with a ton of energy. She's a smart ball player who knows how to take shots that are to her advantage. Offensively, she can finish at the rim, attack the mid-range area and pull up, splash it from 3. Defensively, she can sit down and defend PGs all the way to stretch 4s. She anticipates well, getting steals, on the glass on both ends of the floor, and just competes her tail off. This kid plays each and every game like that, giving Goodpasture an opportunity to win each night. She may not get the pub like some of the others, however she is the glue that makes this team stick. HK does the little things and does them well. A student of the game, this kid has a good feel of the ebb of flow of it, and knows when to strike. Offensively, she can knock shots down from the arc, get paint touches, and hit open teammates. Defensively, she is going to contribute, slowing down the opposition, being in the correct position to get turnover opportunities. What I love about her game is she is going to contribute in every facet of it, having a stat line with something in every category. She does a lot of the dirty work, loose balls, takes charges. Ect. She just comes into the gym with her hat on and does whatever is needed from her ball club. Madi stars in her role and does so well. She may not be the most sought out person, but contributes all across the board. Whatever needs to be done, she does just that, giving her team an advantage. It's not about stats with this young lady. Hustle and heart, competing at the highest level, and being a selfless leader willing to do whatever it takes. That's her game.
