3A sub-state kicked off tonight state-wide so I traveled to Haven to catch what I expected to be a difficult opponent for the 14-6 Wildcats. Seeded #6 in the Halstead Sub-State the home team, who made the 2024 3A state tournament, hosted Marysville. The #11 seed Bulldogs, from the North Central Kansas League, arrived with a 9-11 record. Both teams battled some of the top teams in the state during the regular season.

Marysville led for a high percentage of the game but never lead by more than 7. Haven was within a point with a minute remaining but could not get over the hump. The Bulldogs went 3/16 from the line in the final quarter but, very late, got three straight offensive rebounds off the second miss. Haven's final best chance, that would have tied the game, came on a basket drive that sent multiple bodies sprawling and yielded a miss shot and no foul call. Marysville held on for a 42-38 win. The Bulldogs next will travel to Cheney Tuesday, March 4, for a semi-final game. #3 seed hammered Chaparral 61-32 to advance. Below are a few notes on standouts for both teams.

Audrey Dressman, 5'5", SG, Marysville, 2026 - Dressman not only showed herself to be a shooter defenses have to keep track of but also that she had the athleticism to score on a difficult, challenged take. Working right to left across the lane she scored a terrific, reverse scoop. She defended well on perimeter but consistently did not defend cutters across her face who were flashing to the ball. Dressman will need to cut down live turnovers for the Bulldogs to have a shot against Cheney. Dressman canned a couple three point shots and finished with 9 points.

Lindsey Dressman, 5'8", SG, Marysville, 2025 - Dressman led all scorers with 17 points, showing herself to be a capable, fluid three point shooter with good bounce off the catch. She showed smarts working for scores in the half court and getting the ball down the floor against Haven's full court pressure. When Dressman caught the ball on the move in the center of the court she led good scoring opportunities. She created her own shot and created in the paint and the mid-range. Dressman also defended solidly.

Kacy Roesch, 5'10", PF, Marysville, 2026 - Against the size of Haven's frontcourt Roesch had a terrific defensive game. She also came up huge with a pair of late offensive rebounds off missed free throws. Offensively she showed speed with the ball going end-to-end off turnovers and a very strong turnaround jumper in the lane. I really like how well Roesch moves into open spaces inside to catch dimes for shots. A very good offensive rebounder with solid size and terrific length.

[player_tooltip player_id='544003' first='Avery' last='Brawner'], 6'0", CG, Haven, 2026 - When teammate [player_tooltip player_id='616756' first='Sienna' last='DeFrain'] struggled to score in the second half Brawner picked it up. After notching just one bucket in the first half Brawner got it going in the second. She canned a three as part of scoring 11 of her 13 total points. She had a strong night defensively, swatting several shots, and commanded the defensive glass whenever she was around the ball. Brawner has terrific size, good strength, smarts and scoring ability with defenders hanging on her.

[player_tooltip player_id='616756' first='Sienna' last='DeFrain'], 5'9", PF, Haven, 2025 - DeFrain started off hot, notching 6 of the Wildcats' 10 first quarter points. She struggled to get shots to fall the rest of the game and ended with 10 points. DeFrain has a terrific frame and showed speed with the ball. She consistently worked to draw contact on scoring chances and defended with physicality.
