Numbers don't tell the whole story when it comes to delineating just how much a player has accomplished during any given basketball season. Except when they do. [player_tooltip player_id='498658' first='Morgan' last='Mathiowetz'] does it all for Sleepy Eye-St. Mary's, the tiny parochial school 45 miles northwest of Mankato, both on and off the stat sheet just as other members of the athletic Mathiowetz clan have done for generations. Morgan has already captured numerous accolades in her burgeoning basketball career. Now the sophomore guard can add one more: Prep Girls Hoops Class A Player of the Year.

About those stats. Morgan's numbers from the 2024-25 season are extraordinary.

Mathiowetz averaged 33.6 points per game, 1,143 in total. She topped the 40-point mark six times with a season-high 48 versus Russell-Tyler-Ruthton, 46 against BOLD and 44 against the Knights' archrivals form Sleepy Eye Public. She finished in the 30s another 20 times.

According to the complete SESM statistics posted at mngirlsbasketballhub.com, Morgan shot nearly 62% from the field and 45.7% from three-point range. She buried 107 shots from beyond the arc.

Mathiowetz wasn't just a scorer, either. She averaged 8.3 rebounds per game along with 5.4 steals. Her assist totals equaled 4.7 per game with just 2.3 turnovers.

Much of what Mathiowetz brings to her team cannot be measured, however. She is the consummate leader, a player who makes everyone around her better while carrying the team on her back night after night. I attended the postgame press conference after SESM was eliminated from title contention at the Class A State Tournament. I can honestly say I have never heard an athlete at any level give better answers to media questions in the most difficult of circumstances. She was a pro.

This summer the 11th-ranked prospect in the sophomore class will take the next step in her development. Just as her sister Madison did prior to moving on to South Dakota State University, Morgan will up her level of competition this summer. She's joining coach Sam Ebenreiter's [program_tooltip program_id='712687' first='Minnesota' last='Fury'] 2027 UAA squad. After dominating Class A high school ball, after taking on all comers in this region with the [program_tooltip program_id='712699' first='Minnesota' last='Rise'], Mathiowetz will now face many of the best players in the country on the UAA Circuit where numbers mean little and players have to prove themselves in every game. There's no doubt in our mind that she is up to the challenge.

It was a dream season for the 6'1 guard/small forward. We've felt for a long time that Janssen had the potential to be a star. This winter potential turned into reality as Brielle led her team all the way to the Class A state championship game and the wider basketball world discovered just how much the lanky junior is capable of. Along the way, the Wolverines won 25 times and made believers at every stop as they returned to the State Tournament for the first time in 19 years.

Janssen averaged 27 points and more than a dozen rebounds per game this winter despite being double- and triple-teamed on a regular basis. She handled the physicality well, involved her teammates in every possible way, and more often than not could be relied upon to make the right play. Janssen is the 14th-ranked prospect in the Prep Girls Hoops Class of 2026. Had she not committed early to D2 MSU-Mankato, Brielle would most certainly be bound for Division 1.
