Lift for Life-Troy Barnburner

There were many competitive games over the two days at Lindenwood, but the best game of the team camp came between Lift for Life and Troy, who are two of the best teams in the state. Although it was the middle of June, the game resembled a state tournament game with its excitement and intensity. Lift for Life edged Troy 41-38 in an overtime thriller. There was a lot of talent on the floor on both teams.

The two teams battled back and forth throughout the game all the way until the end of regulation. Troy took a 32-30 lead with 20 seconds left in regulation when 2027 [player_tooltip player_id='777615' first='Grace' last='Means'] took a pass from 2026 [player_tooltip player_id='982968' first='Mya' last='Robinson'] and hit a 3-pointer in transition. Lift for Life had the counter when 2027 standout [player_tooltip player_id='777605' first='Amaya' last='Manuel'] went into her bag and knocked down the game-tying jumper to send the game into overtime. The Hawks eventually won the game in overtime on a driving layup by 2026 guard [player_tooltip player_id='488377' first='Zha' last='Harris'].

Both teams showcased deep and talented backcourts. In addition to Manuel and Harris, the Hawks also got good games from 2026 [player_tooltip player_id='493477' first='Diamond' last='Polk'] and 2027 [player_tooltip player_id='803071' first='Cara' last='Manuel']. Any one of those four can get loose at any moment on offense while also providing defensive pressure. Up front, 5'9" 2027 forward Rian Lenox was a rebounding machine as she continued to get extra possessions for her team.

With Robinson and Means together once again, the Trojans will have one of the top backcourt combos in the state. They are joined in the lineup by 2026 Ashlynn Meyers, who can really shoot it from downtown. 2028 [player_tooltip player_id='1259234' first='Jada' last='Pace'] was also putting in work as she showed that she belonged in a high level game such as this one was.

Later in the day, Lift for Life was involved in another close game to the finish. This time, it was Jackson, another talented Class 6 team. The Indians battled all the way to the end and actually had a final shot to win, but it bounced off the back rim and Lift for Life held on for a one-point win.

Jackson has some excellent young talent on the team, with 5'8" 2028 guard [player_tooltip player_id='905177' first='Kate' last='Deck'] and 6'1" 2028 forward [player_tooltip player_id='1092869' first='Lauren' last='Dorey'] each having some big moments. The one player who I was most impressed with was 5'7 guard [player_tooltip player_id='813615' first='Jayla' last='Smith'], who was constantly getting into the lane and hitting tough buckets. She plays with tremendous tenacity and her teammates feed off her toughness.

[player_tooltip player_id='803053' first='Ryenn' last='Gordon'] (Centralia): The 5'9" 2027 point guard was one of the many talented backcourt players at the event. She was making things happen for her team throughout the two days with her scoring and playmaking. She really excelled in the open court as she had many coast to coast trips for buckets. She was also knocking down perimeter jumpers and making things easier for her teammates with her passing.

[player_tooltip player_id='1203955' first='Myia' last='Dillman'] (Mid Buchanan): It was my first time seeing this talented 2027 guard in person and I was very impressed with her overall play. She is a creative scorer who also has a high basketball IQ. She found the switches on the screen and when the bigger player came out to defend her, she immediately attacked the mismatch with her quickness. She scored on some slick moves off the dribble and she can also shoot it from the perimeter.

Hannah Gaines (South Shelby): A 2026 guard who played a solid all-around game when I watched her against West County. She had a nice feel for the game as she dropped several dimes with her fine court vision. She kept her head on a swivel when she dribble and she was passing her teammates open. When she wanted to assert herself, she was more than capable of getting a bucket.

[player_tooltip player_id='457728' first='Jael' last='Green'] (University City): The 5'5" 2026 point guard has been doing big things at U. City since she was a freshman and she showed it against at Lindenwood this week. She is a consummate floor leader who makes things happen with her speed and quickness. I was most impressed with her on-ball defensive pressure. It helped set the tone for the rest of the team to get after it on the defensive end. She also showed her good penetrating skills and perimeter shooting to go along with her playmaking ability.

[player_tooltip player_id='351753' first='Ava' last='Vanecek'] (Webster Groves): A 5'9" 2026 guard who entered high school as a shooter, but has developed into an all-around scoring threat. She still shoots it well from distance and she moves well without the ball and comes off screens shot ready. She was also setting up defenders with good shot fakes to attack off the dribble for mid range jumpers and short runners in the lane. She can also handle the ball and facilitate when she has to. She also had some fine defensive moments where she would use her length to disrupt an opposing ball handler.

[player_tooltip player_id='947898' first='Sadie' last='Patterson'] (West County): A 5'7" 2027 forward who I enjoyed watching play on Tuesday because she plays a lot taller than her actual size with the way she handles herself around the basket. She has excellent footwork and good post moves in the lane. Her spin move in traffic is a good go-to move for her. She was always on the attack from the high post, which earned her several trips to the free throw line.
