Meet the Rising Stars: Key Players in Women’s Basketball

They may be the main attraction. The girl who goes out and scores double-digit points, along with grabbing some boards. However, any successful team has that girl or girls who shine at the other things. I'm not necessarily talking about the stuff that shows up in the box scores, but things such as defending, making key box outs, setting screens, and making a timely cut to free someone up on the backside. Those things are just a few things that stand out, but things teams need for someone to do to be successful.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>When I think of key contributors, they come in all shapes, sizes, and pack attributes you may or may not think of. I know coaches think of these kids as linchpins to what they do successfully as a whole. This kid plays with a lot of heart and is determined to contribute in some form or fashion. Whatever the assignment is, she is going to go out there and give you her all. She can get to the glass using her speed, hit the open 3, but her calling card is on the defensive end, where she goes toe to toe with whoever she is guarding. All jokes aside, this young lady is a defensive juggernaut. She's going by to lock you up the full length of the court, making you work the entire time. She gets steals, deflections, and is really a nuisance on the defensive side of the ball. Offensively, she's going to be in attack mode. She will knock the 3 ball down, but her game is getting to the rim and finishing. A quiet contributor who does the little things and excels at them. She can score it from all 3 levels, grab boards, defend, etc. She's the type of player who just grinds throughout the course of the game. When it's all said and done, she has posted a nice stat line where she has given you double-digit points, along with checking other statistical boxes. She can score from multiple spots on the floor; however, it's her play-making decisions that stand out that giving her club the advantage. She can pull the 3 ball, get to the rim, or drop dimes to team members. Defensively, she gets after it, causing turnovers, being solid. She's a kid who plays with poise and doesn't get rattled. She has a nice iso game, where she will showcase her handles to set up her defender as she makes a move towards the basket or nails a shot attempt. A heady ballplayer who strives to be great and stays in the gym.
