Deeper Dive: Class 1A Region 1 Evaluations

After going through all classes in the state of TN, and looking at a few talented players from the class as a whole, this evaluation takes a closer look into the regions that make up the class. Here are a few players people should take note of in Region 1 in Class 1A prior to the high school season starting.    [player_tooltip player_id='1126423' first='Ella' last='Head'] is an important returning piece for the North Greene girls' basketball program.   Last year, Head and the rest of the North Greene team finished with a record of 31-5. They were able to claim a spot in the state tournament with their play. Head's winning skills were showcased throughout their regular season and playoff run.   She has a solid three-point jumper and is a good wing defender. She also can provide rebounding at the guard position and is an above-average playmaker. It will be exciting to see what sort of season head can put together in her senior year.     Taylie Proffit closed out her sophomore season for Washburn High School strongly.   Proffitt, in six of her last eight games of the 2024-2025 season, had 10 or more points. This included a game where she recorded 19 points against Cumberland Gap High School. One of the main traits of her offensive game that helps her get these scoring outputs is her three point shot. She had multiple games with two or more made threes last season.   Proffitt is also a solid athlete overall. This helps her be a good player on the defensive end.     [player_tooltip player_id='900783' first='Abigail' last='Epperson'] showed great skill last year for Washburn High School.   In her junior year, Epperson established herself as a great rebounder, most notably on the offensive side. She was constantly in the mix in generating second scoring chances for her team. This resulted in her garnering 86 offensive rebounds on the season.   This same intensity that she used on the offensive end translated over to the defensive side. On the year Epperson combined for 82 steals and blocks. These contributions she provided for her team were huge last season, and they will be so again this season in her senior year.     At the power forward position, [player_tooltip player_id='899945' first='Keyona' last='Hague'] provides a lot for the Unaka High School basketball team. That should continue in her senior season.   Hague has a willingness and knack to rebound. It is noticeable that she takes pride in it. Along with this, she is a solid scorer from inside the post. She has a good touch that allows her to capitalize on opportunities around the basket.   On defense, she is a great post defender and has the ability to step out and guard wings. It will be exciting to see what Hague and the rest of the Unaka High School team can accomplish, coming off a 22-10 season.     [player_tooltip player_id='1248829' first='Azariah' last='Spurgeon'] has the chance to be a special player.   In just her freshman year, Spurgeon showcased a highly skilled playstyle. One thing that jumps our right away is the great mechanics she has on her jumper. She displayed these textbook mechanics lead points in a game against Unaka High School last season. In the game she knocked down four threes.   Spurgeon can also create off the dribble. If she sees a gap, she can push the pace and has high-level footwork to get around defenders and score when she makes her way to the painted area. She is also a gifted passer at the PG position.
