Five 1A regions down – one more to go.

We have extensively dissected five of the six regions that comprise the 1A field of South Carolina High School League (SCHSL) teams. We conclude our preseason journey of 1A with a look at Region 6-A.

There are talented teams in this region – including the lone team since COVID not named Military Magnet to have won a 1A state championship.

A grand total of seven teams comprise this region. As we are roughly a few weeks shy from tip-off of the 2025-26 season, here is our preview of that septet of teams from Region 6-A.

Carvers Bay

(2024-25 Record: 25-4, 12-0)

Carvers Bay has competed in the 1A ranks since the pandemic year of 2020-21 when the Bears moved down from 2A. Last season was the most successful season, record-wise for the Bears since that move.

When a team can say that the only in-state teams to deal it losses were Military Magnet and Denmark-Olar, said team did something correct. Carvers Bay prevailed over Allendale-Fairfax in the first round of the 1A state tournament then defeated Scott's Branch in the second round only to fall to the Vikings in the Lower State semifinal.

Last season's team graduated five seniors – and former coach Logan Kingsbury accepted an assistant job with the men's basketball team at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Key Players:

[player_tooltip player_id='756309' first='Erykah' last='Brown'] will be embarking on her senior season with Carvers Bay. Brown can be placed in a team's lineup either at the point, as a two guard, a wing or a small forward. She averaged 6.6 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.4 steals per contest.

The same applies to [player_tooltip player_id='863209' first='Kandace' last='Hutchinson']. Listed at 5-foot-10, she will find minutes either as a power forward or at the three. Hutchinson played with the junior varsity team two years ago and competed in 29 games last season. She averaged 6.5 rebounds, 5.7 points and 1.4 steals in 2024-25 for the Bears.

Latta

(2024-25 Record: 19-7, 10-2)

In many ways, the region was a two-way race between Latta and Carvers Bay. The two region losses the Vikings were dealt were courtesy of the Bears.

Record-wise, Latta put together its best season since 2013-14 – which was also a 19-win campaign for the Vikings. That season was also a year where Latta was crowned 1A state champions. Last season may not have produced the same tournament success, but it did re-establish that the Vikings are a force to be reckoned with.

Victories over Cross and Ridgeland preceded a loss to Military Magnet in last season's tournament. After graduating four seniors from last season's team, Bobby Richardson will be heading into his second season at the helm for the Vikings.

Key Players:

Returning for one more go-round in Latta green and gold is [player_tooltip player_id='380996' first='Kaliya' last='Herman'] – a 5-foot-2 shooting guard. Herman played in 24 games last season and averaged 18.5 points, 5.7 steals and 5.3 rebounds.

Teams looking to earn victories over the Vikings also have to game plan for [player_tooltip player_id='987451' first='Jeziyah' last='Page'] who is beginning her junior campaign at Latta. She averaged 11.6 points, 3.7 steals and three rebounds in 25 matchups.

Johnsonville

(2024-25 Record: 6-11, 6-6)

Last season's Flashes may not have reached the same heights as Johnsonville teams from the early 2010s, but they did have a five-win improvement over its 2023-24 assembling.

The Flashes struggled mightily against non-region foes but its improved play against region adversaries was what earned Johnsonville a berth in last season's 1A state tournament. Johnsonville was dealt an early exit from last season's tournament by virtue of Bethune-Bowman.

Latima Parnell's team began what appears to be an upward trajectory for the Flashes. Keeping that trend going in the right direction will be key to a successful 2025-26 season for Johnsonville.

Green Sea Floyds

(2024-25 Record: 8-13, 6-6)

Out of the eight wins that Green Sea Floyds earned last season, two of them were non-region wins against the same team. That team was SCISA 2A Conway Christian.

Even though the Trojans finished with an identical 6-6 record as Johnsonville, Green Sea Floyds dropped both of its head-to-head matchups against the Flashes last season. Green Sea Floyds matched up against Ridgeland in the first round of the 1A state tournament last season – the Jaguars won in a 46-40 decision.

The 2024-25 season was the first for coach Brett Phillips who assumed the reins at Green Sea Floyds after longtime coach Tracy Kienast retired.

Key Players:

Beginning her junior season with Green Sea Floyds is [player_tooltip player_id='355638' first='Shantavia' last='Hilliard'] who competed in all 21 games last season for Green Sea Floyds. Hillard averaged 9.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.4 blocks and 2.2 steals per contest. Hillard is a multi-sport athlete who also plays softball.

Paris McClellan has been playing at the varsity level with the Trojans since she was a seventh grader. She also competed in all 21 Green Sea Floyds games last season and averaged seven rebounds, six points and 1.8 steals per game.

Janyrah McClleod played a significant role as well throughout the Trojans' 2024-25 season. She too was available for all 21 Trojans games last season and averaged 5.4 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.2 steals.

Tanisha Myers provided a major boost to Green Sea Floyds' rebounding efforts last season as a freshman. Myers averaged 7.9 boards per contest – in addition to 2.3 blocks and 1.8 steals for the Trojans.

Tttia Lynch has not only played basketball throughout her athletic career but also softball. Lynch also helped the Trojans' efforts on the glass. Lynch averaged 5.6 rebounds and 1.7 steals in 2024-25.

Lake View

(2024-25 Record: 5-11, 4-7)

It is not often that a team goes from its first-ever taste of state championship euphoria to a five-win campaign the following season. That 2023-24 Lake View team did graduate four seniors.

The 2024-25 Wild Gators fell back to earth as Lake View did not earn a single victory in its non-region schedule against an in-state opponent. In addition, after being the last team standing two years ago, the Wild Gators experienced an early exit from last season's 1A state tournament at the hands of Scott's Branch.

Lake View has been part of Region 6-A since 2022-23. The Wild Gators were previously part of Region 5-A.

Key Players:

A player to watch for Lake View is [player_tooltip player_id='605297' first='Zy'Kiara' last='Waters']. She is a combo guard who is advancing into her junior season. Waters stands at 5-foot-9. She has played at the varsity level since she was in the seventh grade.

Hemingway

(2024-25 Record: 2-15, 2-9)

Despite only earning two victories last season, the Tigers did qualify for the 1A state tournament. Those two regular season victories were at the expense of region rivals Lake View and Hannah-Pamplico.

Hemingway then ran into Military Magnet in the first round of the playoffs. Needless to say, that first round contest was all Eagles, all the time.

It was in 2014-15 when the Tigers last reached the 10-win plateau when the team finished with an 11-5 record and a 5-3 mark in its region. Last season, Hemingway remained as a 1A team but moved from Region 5-A to Region 6-A.

Hannah-Pamplico

(2024-25 Record: 1-16, 1-11)

The primary highlight for Hannah-Pamplico occurred on Jan. 29 of last season when the Raiders notched its lone victory of the 2024-25 campaign. That was a 42-23 decision on the Raiders' home floor at the expense of Hemingway.

Outside of that, last season was a forgettable one for Hannah-Pamplico with only one win and no state tournament bid. Perhaps a coaching change could be the beginning of the tide turning for the Raiders.

The Michael Manning era has commenced for Hannah-Pamplico girls basketball. He previously spent the past five years as an assistant for the boys basketball team and spent eight seasons as boys coach at Lake City.

Key Players:

JaKiya Wilson is advancing into her senior season. She is a multi-sport athlete who also plays volleyball in addition to her basketball achievements. Wilson stands at 5-foot-4 and plays either at the point or at the two.

Jalaya Graham is beginning her junior season with Hannah-Pamplico. As someone who can play as both a small forward and shooting guard, Graham can find time at the wing. Graham stands at 5-foot-5.

Also part of Hannah-Pamplico's senior class is Khloe Jones who primarily plays as a small forward. Jones greatly helps the Raiders' rebounding efforts. She too can also find time in the backcourt at the two.
