Rabun County vs. Providence Christian: Game Recap

No matter the size of the school, you can normally find good players in the state of Georgia. This game was a great example of that as some familiar names shined and some new players emerged in this Region 8 D-1A matchup.    Southards played with her normal aggressiveness on both ends of the floor and did so well. She is a relentless competitor who always leaves everything on the court. She is the team's best on ball defender taking the opponents best player and applying pressure every possession. Offensively, Southards is very skilled. She is an excellent shooter from deep and attacks the basket with reckless abandon, converting layups or getting to the free throw line. Southards has all of the ability and intangibles to have a great high school career.     Owens had a very good game running the point for Rabun County. She did a good job facilitating the offense for the Wildcats first but took advantage of scoring opportunities when they presented themselves. Owens is a very good ballhandler and passer. She shot the ball very well from three-point range and got to the basket and finished. She used her quickness on defense to cause multiple turnovers, including multiple steals while guarding the ball.     Thompson, who is an excellent shooter, went on a run in the third quarter where she scored 11 points in just a couple of minutes. Thompson knocked down three three-point shots and a couple of midrange jumpers for Rabun County helping bust the game open after halftime. Thompson is a physically strong player who also did a very good job rebounding the ball. She handled the ball very well showing patience and her experience.     Cameron got stronger as the game went on for Providence, unfortunately for the Storm it was not enough. Cameron is an exceptional athlete with excellent speed and quickness, but its her leaping ability that was even more obvious throughout the game. On offense Rabun County had a very hard time staying in front of Cameron. She was able to penetrate the defense and get in the paint where she did a great job finishing all game long. Cameron used her quickness to blow by her defender and then elevated over her defender for the finish. Cameron also had several offensive rebounds and got to the free throw line multiple times.     Cantrell has great size at the point guard position standing six feet tall. She handled the ball well running the offense for Providence Chrisitan. Cantrell is a real threat to score getting to the basket as well as shooting from outside. Cantrell is strong with her right hand and had success driving the ball often. She used her size and athleticism on offense to score against the smaller defenders from Rabun County. Cantrell did an excellent job drawing several shooting fouls and was also active on the backboards rebounding the ball.     Ojeme was a new player who immediately impressed as she dominated the glass all game long for Providence finishing with over 15 rebounds (6 offensive). Ojeme played with great effort and on one possession grabbed four consecutive offensive rebounds. She also blocked or altered multiple shots on defense. Offensively Ojeme showed good form on her shot knocking down jump shots outside of the paint. Ojeme, a naturally southpaw, will only get better with more time and experience. What she does have you cannot teach or coach.     Galvin-Wright came off the bench and had an impressive showing for Providence Christian. The freshman played very good defense, handled the ball well, and was very vocal encouraging her teammates. She showed the ability to score from the midrange and penetrate the defense. Galvin-Wright was very active, showed good athleticism, and a good knowledge of the game.
