CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Class 4A seventh-ranked Cedar Rapids Xavier had 5A No. 11 Iowa City High on the ropes during Monday night's Mississippi Valley Conference matchup here Ron Thillen Gym. The visitors responded, putting together a decisive second-half run to capture a 49-41 victory.

The Saints faced a challenging, pre-break schedule and should be better for it in the long run. The veteran roster has shown the ability to perform at a high level for the defending state champions.

Here's a closer look at members of the squad that stood out Monday. Evaluations are followed by a photo gallery of Xavier players:

A do-it-all point guard, Wilson can score at all three levels and facilitate from anywhere on the court. She plays bigger than her listed 5-foot-6 height because she's strong. That helps her finish at the rim, defend and rebound. Coming into a game against Iowa City High in late December, Wilson was leading the Saints in points, rebounds, steals and assists. A solid defensive specialist in volleyball, the senior moves well lateral and athleticism stands out. Wilson moves well laterally, which helps her lock down on the ball defensively. She's a smart player that limits mistakes and makes teammates around her better.

Komenda is a versatile forward that can score from anywhere on the court and defend multiple positions. She's a good athlete with strength. Komenda brings a noticeable amount of grit and toughness to the court. With a picture-perfect shooting form from deep, she'll get the benefit of a soft touch on the jumper. Komenda understands angles. That and good positioning lead to her finding success on the backboards. She sees the floor well, moves the ball to teammates and doesn't give up much ground on the defensive end.

Lang is a tough, two-way guard that makes up for a lack of traditional basketball height by bringing an edge and physicality to the floor. It certainly helps her on the defense end, where she combines that grit with lateral quickness and a willingness to shut down the opponent. On offense, she flashes good form and a quick release on the jumper. If the opponent pushes out on her, she's fast off of the dribble with either hand. Again, she's strong. That helps her finish at the rim.

One of only a couple non-seniors in the Saints' rotation against Iowa City High during a December matchup, O'Brien looked as advanced as any of the older teammates around her. The maturity includes a willingness to move the ball when she doesn't see a play and defending with sound technique. O'Brien slides her feet, stays down and keeps her hands straight up. The junior flashes sound shooting form and can operate effectively around the rim. She hits the backboards hard and runs the floor well.

On a roster that is vertically challenged compared to the competition, Harbeck has length and athleticism that helps protect the paint. She was jumping center for the Saints during an early-season title with visiting Iowa City High. Harbeck is effective around the rim on both ends of the court. She finds ways to score in the post with either hand, and will kick it out to open teammates when the defense collapses. Harbeck can take bigger opponents out behind the arc, as well. She can generate stops with her long arms, leaping ability and timing. Harbeck runs the floor well.
