Ray Kimball and I joined forces to offer the first-ever Headliners Invitational Showcase back in November of 2023. After taking a sabbatical in 2024, our conviction became undeniably strong that the Headliners needed to return and become a staple showcase in the community. The inspiration for the Headliners Invitational Showcase came after observing elite camps and prospect camps across the state. There were pieces of traditional showcase formats (games/scrimmaging), college elite camps, and prospect camps that I liked, but something was missing from the equation. The ideal format became apparent as I reflected upon my goal for joining Prep Girls Hoops in the first place: to identify and help girls basketball prospects be recruited by college coaches.

An event where girls would have the opportunity to: 1) Work with college coaches who want to recruit them, 2) Be evaluated by college coaches who fit their level of ability, and 3) Receive comprehensive media coverage by Prep Girls Hoops scouts, was clearly needed for prospects in the community. Every prospect is unique, and the traditional showcase format may not be the best fit for everyone. Those girls need opportunities to demonstrate their skills through small-sided games and drills in front of college coaches--not just games. That's exactly why drills emphasizing different skill areas, 3v3, and 5v5 games were all included at the Headliners Invitational. The format was chosen to set prospects up for success in front of the college coaches. Every prospect had a reversible jersey with a number that corresponded to the information in the college coaches' event packets. Every college program in the state received an invitation to this event. Nearly 20 colleges pre-registered to recruit at the showcase, and time was built into the event for prospects to speak with college coaches after their session. Every girl had their picture taken by a PGH scout and will be included in a post-event write-up that highlights their strengths.

Additionally, there were no middle school showcases offered in the state at the time, so it became clear that we had a great opportunity to provide an exceptional first experience for middle schoolers. Since college coaches are recruiting/evaluating high schoolers and our PGH coverage prioritizes high school prospects during their AAU and high school seasons, having a middle school session became very important. Middle schoolers not only worked with college coaches, but also had the opportunity to train with former Evergreen State women's basketball collegiate player Angela Sikora (Adrian College Assistant Coach). Every middle schooler is on the Prep Girls Hoops radar ahead of their high school career and will be promoted on our platform. By experiencing a showcase ahead of their freshman year, these middle schoolers will be better prepared for high-stakes environments in front of college coaches in the future.

My coverage focused primarily on the Team Wings and Team Lynx at the showcase. Here are evaluations for middle schoolers representing the Wings during session two at the [program_tooltip program_id='923712' first='Prepare' last='2 Win Basketball'] Headliners Invitational!

Arrie's balance and perimeter accuracy were a strength during drills. Her quickness, basketball IQ, three-point shooting, facilitating, and aggressive defense stood out in the games for Team Wings. She penetrated off the dribble with a burst, collapsed the help, then dished a great dump pass to an open teammate. Arrie made unselfish extra passes for assists and was an effective facilitator. She moved her feet quickly to cut off drives and finished breakaway layups without missing a beat. Arrie sidestepped a defender to score in the paint and swished a triple with smooth mechanics from the wing. She cut backdoor and finished at the rim effectively using either hand. Arrie was one of the most impactful two-way players at the P2W Headliners Invitational Showcase.

Raegan was a standout at the P2W Headliners Invitational Showcase in October, and she turned in an MVP performance for Team Wings in her second appearance. Her ball-handling speed, control, stagger dribbles, and athletic stance on the move were among the best in drills. She switched hands confidently, pounded the ball, maintained great balance, and shot accurately from beyond the arc. In games, Raegan separated herself on both ends of the court. One of her highlight plays was when she swiped the ball away on defense, turned on the jets, pushed the ball with both hands the length of the court, muscled through the final defender using a shoulder, kept her balance, and finished strong off two feet. Raegan attacked gaps relentlessly and scored several drive-by layups. When the help committed to her dribble, she did a good job of dishing out assists to open teammates. Raegan crashed the boards and knocked down an elbow jumper after securing an offensive rebound. She swished three-point jumpers and split the defense to score a sweet scoop finish in traffic without the backboard. Raegan blew by defenders off the dribble and finished contested layups well throughout the day. Her complete performance as a facilitator, defender, and multidimensional scorer earned her recognition as my MVP.

Alayna is a guard from Clarkston that I was excited to see on the registration list for the P2W Headliners Invitational Showcase after I watched her stand out for Clarkston during a middle school game last fall. She is going to be a great addition to their backcourt next year. Alayna kept her eyes up and showed excellent fundamentals during the ball-handling drills. She changes speeds, heights, switches hands, and pounds the ball to keep control. Her balance, finishes, and step-through footwork were also among the best in drills. In games, Alayna was very impactful for Team Wings. She demonstrated a great basketball IQ after a penetrating drive into the lane. Alayna landed with a jump stop, pivoted, and fired a skip pass to an open shooter on the opposite wing for a triple, instead of forcing up a contested shot. She side-stepped a defender on a drive to score a contested layup, and I noted that her euro-step footwork was "smooth". Alayna pushed the ball up the court and glided to the rim using a showtime fake-pass euro step to freeze the defender, then scored the high rip finish. She crashed the offensive glass, swiped the ball away on defense, and dished out assists.

Elliana worked hard on both ends of the court to make an impact for Team Wings at the P2W Headliners Invitational Showcase. Her aggressive defense created turnovers, and Elliana won the effort plays. She chased down a 50/50 ball for a steal, drove hard to the rim, and caused a foul. Elliana looked to create scoring for teammates and showed her perimeter range by draining a smooth three-pointer from the corner.

Kennady has a bright future ahead of her in the Summit Academy basketball program. Her height and versatility to play inside or knock down perimeter shots will be a difference maker at the high school level. Kennady drained two straight triples up top during the drills and another from the corner with confidence. In games, she made an impact for Team Wings, drilling a corner three and finishing well off two feet in the paint. Kennady drove hard to the rim and finished through contact off two feet. She scored another two-foot finish on a baseline drive and buried a straightaway triple up top.

Estella had great footwork on her pivots, got her feet balanced, and ripped the net on a corner three during the shooting station. She knocked down a corner jumper on the hop with confidence and showed good mechanics. Estella stayed confident and let it rip from beyond the arc during games for Team Wings. She snatched defensive rebounds and immediately pushed the ball ahead, scanning the court for open teammates. Estella ran through a pass to eliminate a turnover and caused the defense to foul on her drive to the hoop. She has sharp instincts, handles the ball effectively with both hands, penetrates off the dribble, and is a threat from beyond the arc. Estella had a solid day at the P2W Headliners Invitational Showcase.

Amirrah was a two-way difference maker for Team Wings at the P2W Headliners Invitational Showcase. She started by knocking down threes off the dribble in the shooting stations and showed off her versatility in the games. She's athletic, physical, and gets downhill. Amirrah used a quick crossover to beat her defender, slashed to the rim, then scored through contact for the and-one bucket. She turned up the heat on defense, picking off multiple passes, and dished out assists in transition. Amirrah did an excellent job staying in front of posts and denying entry passes. She drained a straightaway three with good balance, grabbed rebounds on both ends, and forced a travel by closing out full speed on a perimeter shooter. Amirrah turned in a complete performance at the showcase and has a bright future ahead of her.
