Prep Girls Hoops hosted its first Kansas Kickoff this past weekend at Andover's Farha YMCA. Despite it being the first event of summer ball for the majority of the teams competing the caliber of play was consistently strong across the divisions. Take a look at the five 17U division prospects who I have selected to the event's second team.

The Gravette center will one to watch as her high school career unfolds. She has strength to go with a strong frame, good quickness with the ball and bounce when creating shots as well as when finishing short drives. Patton jumped to the ball well, showed solid handles and ran the floor with good speed.

The Belton point guard was as effective running the point as she was filling the shooting guard role. She made effective use of her dribble to back out of trouble or to create space. After finding space off the dribble or sliding into position on the perimeter she shot a quality jumper. What I especially liked was her deceptive quickness defensively and how she played with composure on both ends. Very solid on both ends of the floor.

The Southwestern College (KS) commit showed aggressiveness to create offensively from the perimeter and the ability to fight through defenders to get to the basket. She also shot a smooth perimeter ball with a fairly quick release. Defensively she read developing plays from the weak side to jump interior passes.

Anderson took quality, high arching perimeter jumpers and transitioned very well. She also consistently challenged shots straight up. A couple of "Wow" moments were only spotted by a couple onlookers. The first was stellar a shot block while running down a ball handler speeding toward a layup. Flying through the air she swatted the attempt hard, causing the ball to slam the underside of the backboard and hit the floor hard on its way out of bounds. Anderson saved it and kicked it to her point guard before falling out of bounds. The other was part of a quick, athletic down-the-lane transition drive. I love players who can 'show' the ball strongly. She showed left so strongly a defender swung to head toward a waiting corner shooter, leaving a clear path for a left-handed layup. Both were terrific evidence of her athleticism.

Wallace is a small, slender and athletic guard who knows how to score challenged shots including over taller opponents in finishing situations. Quick on both ends with quick hands and good off-ball anticipating she was pretty much gone off the steal. She was especially successful at protecting the ball while using a little bump to get off layups using the glass.
