As a child of the 1980s and 1990s, I've always appreciated a great athlete nickname. Back then, they weren't random. They were creative, intentional, and rooted in a player's unique skill set. Names like “Reign Man,” “Sir Charles,” and “The Glove” weren't just labels they became extensions of the player's identity.   From “Air” to “The Dream,” “The Big Ticket,” “The Big Nasty,” and “The Big Diesel,” those nicknames added personality to the game and reflected exactly how those players impacted it.   Today, in the 757, the talent pool in girls basketball continues to grow. With so many skilled players making their mark, it feels only right to bring that tradition back, matching each player with a nickname that reflects how they play.   Here is my attempt at properly naming some of the standout talents in the Hampton Roads region.   The Bull and the Butterfly    Nickname: “__The Bull___”   Overview: One of the most physically imposing presences in the state, Cooper consistently dictates terms on the interior. Her ability to impose her will shifts the tone of a game early.   Production: Cooper is a handful on the block, demanding attention, and help when she has the ball on the block. She is adept at using her body, and technique to extend possessions, create opportunities, and finish around the basket,   Skill Set: Having already surpassed 1000 career points, Cooper compliments her physical strength, with impeccable footwork and a soft touch, making her a tough match-up for anyone tasked with stopping her   Projection: Already fielding college offers, Cooper projects to be one of the most coveted players in the class of 2028, as she will only get stronger, as her game becomes more polished.   Why the Nickname Fits: The phrase "strong as a bull" fits Cooper. However, much like a bull anyone willing to get in front of her on the block and defend her better be prepared to take the physical punishment required to contain her.     Nickname: “_The Butterfly____”   Overview: A dynamic perimeter threat, Evans puts immediate pressure on defenses with her ability to get downhill. Her speed and burst separate her from most defenders in the region. As much as the opposition does not want to get in front of her teammate Cooper, they cannot stay in front of Evans.   Production: Evans affects the game in many aspects. She has the ability to penetrate, and finish at the basket, facilitate the offense, and strike from the perimeter. Skills that make her a threat anytime she has the ball   Skill Set: Evans lightning quick first step serves as the blasting cap, for her explosive game. Whether it is anticipating a pass on defense, and igniting a fast break, or breaking down the opposing defense and scoring at will, or setting up a teammate within the offense.   Projection: Having already surpassed 1000 points in her career, Evans projects as a true point guard at the next level. Her accuracy from downtown, explosive first step, and court vision should demand attention from coaches at the next level.   Why the Nickname Fits: Much like a butterfly in flight, Evans utilizes pacing and tempo to keep her opponents off balance before blowing by them and creating problems for the opposition    Your Highness    Nickname: “_Your Highness___”   Overview: Offensively and Defensively Dyson does everything well. Possessing a complete game that commands respect from both teammates and opponent, she is the uncontested team leader anytime she is on the court.   Production: Comfortable scoring at all three levels, and in transition, Dyson does not fear contact. Possessing the strength to finish through contact, as well as the stamina and agility to defend positions 1 through 3. She brings a complete game to whoever she plays for.   Skill Set: Dyson can score at each level, through contact, mid-range and from outside. However, one of her biggest intangibles is the ability to read a defense and create opportunities for her teammates. Dyson is defensively responsible as well and her constant on ball pressure creates havoc on opposing ball handlers.   Projection: Projects as a next-level slashing guard who can create her own shot and apply constant pressure to opposing defenses utilizing strength, vision, and High IQ.   Why the Nickname Fits: Much like royalty Dyson's game commands respect, and those who refuse to give it to her often pay a stiff penalty.    The Foundation    Nickname: “_The Foundation___”   Overview: A solid hoop game is like a house, if the foundation is not solid it will crumble, and Herbert's game is built on a foundation of hard work, and fundamentals.   Production: Any time Herbert steps on the floor the threat of a double-double looms. A Consistent 20 and 10 threat. Herbert is a throwback to post players of the past.   Skill Set: Herberts bread and butter is scoring, and rebounding. However, it would be disrespectful to her game to not acknowledge her defensive versatility. Capable of guarding positions 1-5, she is often tasked with stopping the other team's best offensive weapon. A responsibility she does not shy away from.   Projection: Already having several Division 1 offers, Herbert's game, that is based around solid fundamentals, a strong work ethic, and blue collar approach could see her making a day one impact at whichever program she chooses at the next level.   Why the Nickname Fits: If you were to ask Herbert she would insist that hard work pays off. I agree. Herbert's dedication has built a solid game with a foundation built on fundamentals.    As Shakespeare once said, "what's in a name?". Well to answer the bard directly, I would say these names are fitting tributes to the style of play the ladies I have given them too display.
