The offseason may belong to travel basketball. However, coaches, players, and fans are already looking ahead to another competitive year of high school basketball. From established powers to rising programs, the road to the 2026-2027 season has already begun and the questions surrounding it make the anticipation even greater. Here are some of those questions.

How will these standout freshman guards handle their sophomore seasons leading the backcourt on their own?

Durham put together a strong freshman campaign. Respectfully averaging 13 points, 4 steals, and 3 assists per game as the starting point guard. With both backcourt mates graduating, the offense now runs through Durham.

Her ability to get downhill and finish at the rim from either side already makes her difficult to contain. If the outside shot continues to develop, she could become one of the region's more complete offensive weapons. Defensively, her on-ball pressure, positioning, and IQ consistently create turnovers and transition opportunities. A strong sophomore season could significantly elevate her stock.

Parham closed her freshman season averaging 15 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 steals per game. An explosive offensive guard, she used her speed and athleticism to create matchup problems all season long. With her backcourt mate graduating, Parham has already shown she has the tools to elevate her game even further.

If her mid-range game continues to develop, surpassing 20 points per game next season is a realistic possibility. Defensively, she competes hard on the glass, disrupts passing lanes, and has the strength and athleticism to defend in the post when needed.

Can Menchville get over the hump and win it all?

Menchville High School came close to winning it all this past March. In 2027 any hopes of getting over the hump next season will likely rest on the shoulders of Henson. The 6'2” standout is a nightly triple-double threat in points, rebounds, and blocks. She uses her length, positioning, and timing to dominate the glass and alter shots defensively. While relying on soft hands and polished footwork to score efficiently around the basket. Henson possesses the tools to be the centerpiece of one more deep March run.

Does Maury Continue their forward progress?

Maury High School head coach Julius Owens has done a solid job building Maury into a competitive program, while [player_tooltip player_id='443376' first='Nyla' last='Brown'] has done her part on the court.

With deep three-point range, Brown's offensive game demands attention whenever the ball is in her hands. Athletic enough to thrive in transition as either a ball handler or wing finisher. She can score in both the open floor and half-court sets. Defensively, she has the ability to shut down opposing wings, and with continued development as an on-ball defender, Brown could become one of the names to watch next season.

Just because the high school season is over and summer is here does not mean the basketball scene has gone quiet. Across Hampton Roads, players are already back in the gym sharpening their games. Fully prepared to answer these questions when the 2026-2027 season arrives.
