Experienced Talent Shines at Nike Nationals

The final NCAA live period of the summer brought together many of the nation's top upperclassmen at McCormick Place for Nike Nationals, providing one last opportunity to compete in front of college coaches before the high school season begins. With WNBA All-Star Weekend taking place throughout Chicago, the atmosphere only added to the excitement as prospects took the floor against elite competition.   Throughout the weekend, several juniors and seniors separated themselves with strong performances, showing why they are among the most coveted players in their respective classes. Whether it was creating offense, defending multiple positions, or making winning plays when their teams needed them most, these upperclassmen consistently caught my attention in Chicago.    Essence put together a complete performance in the matchup I watched in Chicago by impacting the game on every possession. Despite being a guard, she elevated for an impressive blocked shot that showed her athleticism and willingness to compete defensively. Offensively, she was crafty with the ball in her hands by using good change of direction, strong handles, and excellent pace to keep defenders guessing. She consistently surveyed the floor, recognized spacing, and made smart decisions as a playmaker. Essence also displayed a polished midrange package with pull-up jumpers, floaters, and runners while attacking downhill with confidence. Her combination of skill, feel for the game, and ability to score at multiple levels made her one of the more impressive guards I saw in Chicago.     Ava impressed with her activity level and versatility by playing with a motor that separated her from most post players. She showcased a polished back-to-the-basket game by elevating for a soft over-the-shoulder finish and later displayed strong footwork with a spin move that led to another bucket. She also showed good elevation on her jumper which adds another layer to her offensive skill set. On the defensive end, Ava crashed the boards with purpose, protected the rim with blocked shots, and consistently used her length and athleticism to impact possessions. She played with good strength in the post on both ends of the floor, and her combination of size, mobility, and relentless effort makes her a high-upside frontcourt prospect.     Gaby turned in one of the best performances I've seen from her in person while playing with confidence and making a consistent impact on the offensive end. She shot the ball exceptionally well by displaying a quick release, smooth mechanics, and deep range that made her a threat every time she touched it. Gabby also did a good job creating her own offense off the bounce, showing she can do more than just space the floor as a shooter. Her confidence, shot-making ability, and overall offensive rhythm were on full display, making this one of her most impressive live evaluations to date.     Gabby delivered another strong performance by combining confident shot-making with physical play on both ends of the floor. She has a smooth stroke with great rotation and a high release which allows her to shoot comfortably over defenders. She was effective knocking down shots on the move and consistently looked confident whenever she let it fly. Beyond her perimeter shooting, Gabby used her good positional size and strength to navigate her way to the rim and finish through traffic. She competed with a physical edge on both ends of the floor, and that makes her a difficult matchup and one of the more complete performers I watched.     Taylor stood out with her ability to create offense while playing with quickness and confidence. She consistently made quality reads by delivering passes with excellent touch and timing to put her teammates in scoring positions. Offensively, she thrives getting downhill when using her athleticism and long stride to attack the rim and embracing contact without shying away from physical play. Taylor is a crafty finisher who showcased a smooth gather step to create space around the basket and also knocked down a nice floater in the lane. With the ball in her hands, she consistently created opportunities for herself and others as a dynamic offensive playmaker.     Harleigh continued to show why her recruitment has taken off this July by earning more than a handful of college offers this month alone thanks to her combination of production and long-term upside. She possesses outstanding size, length, and a frame that already projects well for the next level, while also moving like a good athlete for her position. Harleigh plays with a high motor on both ends of the floor, scored paint points with a quick release, and finished strong around the rim when attacking the basket. With her physical tools, work ethic, and continued development, she remains one of the more intriguing prospects in her class.
