In the words of legendary basketball coach Gregg Popovich, “Defense is a choice, not a chore.” It's not an easy choice, mind you, but players who opt to bring a strong defensive mindset to the gym every day have a much better chance of making it to the next level than those who don't. We're examining numerous attributes when scouting potential college players, but none is more important than their willingness and ability to prevent buckets by the opposition. Here are six defensive difference-makers we liked this past weekend at the Summer Jam.

If someone was teaching a clinic on the fundamentals of post defense we might make a simple suggestion: Just show film of Behnke's performance when we watched at Summer Jam. The 6-foot Spring Lake Park forward, who plays on a strong Fury S40 squad, put on a masterclass in defensive positioning, boxing out, and physical play. Every possession looked the same: locate a body, establish position, and finish the play with the rebound or blocked shot. There was nothing flashy or demonstrative about it. Just relentless, technically sound basketball. Lyla's combination of strength, toughness, and in-game IQ makes her an elite rebounder, as evidenced by the more than 250 boards she collected as a high school freshman. Offensively, Behnke remains highly efficient around the basket, but it was her defensive discipline and physical presence that carried the day.

McCarney's pure athletic ability and substantial offensive gifts have always been apparent, but what impressed me most this weekend was her commitment on the defensive end. The Lakeville South guard has clearly gotten stronger over the past year, and she's putting that added strength to good use. Gabby defended with purpose, moved her feet exceptionally well, crashed the boards, and sprinted back in transition possession after possession for Fury 2029 S40. Her competitiveness shines through on defense as much as it does on offense. She has the quickness to stay in front of guards, the length to disrupt passing lanes, and the toughness to battle bigger players when necessary. Add in her passing, shooting, and overall skill set, and you've got one of the more complete two-way players in the class.

One of my favorite defensive plays of the spring belongs to McKean. A couple of weeks ago at the Dakota Challenge in Sioux Falls, we watched Ella literally rip the ball out of an opponent's hands and race the length of the floor for a basket, all in one fluid sequence that was equal parts brains and brawn. That play is emblematic of what Ella brings to the court: strength, toughness, and a healthy level of competitiveness on which her game is built. The Sioux Falls Washington guard uses her physicality exceptionally well, whether she's defending bigger players, fighting through contact, or powering to the basket herself. She is a focused, no-nonsense competitor who contributes all over the floor and is willing to do whatever her team needs.

Quast enjoyed a terrific weekend of offensive efficiency as she often does, but I kept finding myself drawn to what she was doing defensively. The Shakopee forward (pictured above) uses her outstanding length and improved mobility to impact possessions all over the floor. She rebounds relentlessly, blocks shots, and forces turnovers simply by being active and engaged. At 6-foot-1, Ellie has ideal size for the modern game, and as she's grown into her body, her defensive versatility has taken a significant step forward. She also competes with a level of physicality that stands out. Playing alongside talented teammates like 6'3 post [player_tooltip player_id='897889' first='Madilynn' last='Bell'] of Lakeville North sometimes means Ellie's efforts are overshadowed, but Quast's impact is impossible for coaches to ignore.

Stemwedel approaches defense with a level of urgency that immediately catches your attention. The Watertown guard plays every possession as though the outcome depends on getting one more stop. She moves exceptionally well laterally, stays low in her stance, and works tirelessly to keep opponents from gaining an advantage. Lydia's combination of athleticism, strength, and determination makes her a difficult matchup on the perimeter. This was the first time we've scouted Lydia, but even with a limited sample size it's obvious that her defensive intensity and willingness to compete leaves a strong initial impression.

Growing up in a basketball family – both parents are high school coaches, and her brother is an impressive college player – is clearly leaving its mark on Neuendorf's box of tools. The Hamlin guard understands the game and, perhaps more importantly, understands the value of defense. Like her Heiser AAU teammate [player_tooltip player_id='1723340' first='Lydia' last='Stemwedel'], Paxton takes tremendous pride in her assignments and competes with purpose on every possession. She stays active, communicates well, and consistently puts herself in the right position. Offensively, she's a quality three-point shooter, handles the ball effectively, and distributes with the confidence of a true point guard. There's an awful lot to like about Neuendorf's game, but what I appreciated most was her commitment to the less glamorous side of the game. Bottom line: players like Paxton help their teams win.
