2nd Annual iKHONICS' Gym Middle School Showcase: Intriguing Ones

Today was the 2nd Annual iKHONICS' Gym Middle School Showcase at iKHONICS Gym located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. This is a showcase that brought together some of the best 2032 and 2031's in the state to compete under one roof as they move into their next year of action. With the new rule being approved that 8th graders can compete at the Varsity level beginning this Winter, it changes up the game-plan for almost every program across this State so this event is a great way to be seen for some of the prospects who will be competing with Varsity this season.    Over the next few days we will be highlighting everyone who attended this event in one way or another but below we discuss five prospects that should be Varsity producers over their high school careers when they finally get there. They stood out to everyone competing in this event and they should only get better with time/experience.   Thanks for tuning in and enjoy!    Brynn Schroeder competes with a solid play-style out of the Forward position. This is a common situation of the tallest player being put down-low when they are younger but Schroeder also demonstrates some guard-like abilities when she attacks from the midrange or behind the three point line. Her length and reach helps her finish near the hoop over defenders. We saw that time and time again on Sunday morning. There is still a long way to go for Schroeder in this game but she has the foundation to be a name that produces at a high rate at Central DeWitt over her high school career. She has a lot of intangibles that coaches love to see. She just needs to stay in the lab during her downtime and she will be a problem for years to come.     If you are looking for a prospect that plays the game the right way and someone that everyone loves to have on their team then you should look towards Rylie Hunter of Cedar Falls and Lady Martin Bros. Select. Hunter was a constant throughout this event. She would show up every few possessions making a positive play on either side of the ball. Offensively, when she needed to, she scored it. When she had to create for others, she got down-hill off a quick first step and made it happen. Defensively, she did a good job of moving her feet and beating her matchup to their spot down the floor each possession. I keep telling everyone to watch out for Cedar Falls the next few years. Their young hoopers are very, very talented and Hunter is apart of that group.     When a player turns out to be really good by then end of their high school career, it's never that big of a shock to those who have been paying attention. Lauren Huber has the chance to be like her sister by the end of high school or maybe even better. Which says a lot accounting for the fact that her sister is a current D1 hooper. The way that Lauren plays is calm, cool, and collected. She has a good feel at shooting the ball from deep off the catch from every angle and distance but she also fairly good at getting to convert near the rim on either block. She works ridiculously hard on defense to stick onto her matchup and she always executes the team game-plan that is set into place prior. From an evaluation standpoint - there is a lot to like about LH. She is going to be a name that is known throughout Mount Vernon over the next few years if she plays her cards right.     Brooklyn Heying is the individual that I saw in this event that everyone is sleeping on the most right now. Heying is a pure SG with picture perfect shot form from deep. She didn't hit the most shots on the day but she still made a good amount while looking like a veteran. When you break down her actual shot, it's one of the nicest forms we have seen all year on the road while evaluating. The height it reaches, the rotation it moves with, and the way it doesn't even make the net shake when it goes in is all extremely impressive. I'm not sure if Heying will get the nod to play at the high school level this Winter but she could hold her own on the Freshman/JV levels if she were given a shot. Literally and metaphorically.     I usually would not speak on a player that doesn't have a chance to compete at the Varsity level throughout the next few years but I'm going to make an exception with this one. Sully McCarville will only be going into the 6th grade, so she won't have the chance to compete at the Varsity level for at least another two years but the type of game she competes with is noteworthy. This is a lighting fast PG, playing up 2/3 grade levels on the regular, holding her own and even standing out at times again some of the states best. She got to all of her spots at Will during this showcase off the dribble. She even had times where she was double teamed while going to score a reverse layup and she would still get it up to convert the attempt. She also already understands how to get the attention of the defense and how to pass out to those are open around the outside. I have a feeling that McCarville will be a smaller PG for most of her career so that she is this seasoned already and she has two more years to get better before she is really seen throughout the state is something to write about.
