PGH Illinois Freshman Showcase: Team 4 recap

At this year's Illinois Freshman Showcase camp, we saw some of the best up-and-coming talent in the state of Illinois for the class of 2030. Players were given the afternoon to showcase their skills in 3x3 and 5x5 matchups; largely paired up with players whom they haven't played with before. Here's a recap of Team 4, and how they performed at this Sunday's event; listed in alphabetical order.    Londyn is a speedy and evasive offensive player, who possesses excellent ball control, and has an ability to weave through the defense as she drives to the hoop.   Londyn seems very comfortable with the ball in her hands, and is always looking for the open shooter. She's also a crafty defender, who can sneak up on the ballhandler and pick an occasional pocket.   Londyn tells me that her best skills are in attacking the basket and her midrange game.     Peyton's height gives her an advantage in the post, and she's got terrific hands when she's given the ball. She can finish lefty when she needs to, and has great toughness in the paint; she's tough to stop once she gets going downhill.   Peyton has a nice delivery and has a solid zip on her passes when she's playing on the outside. She's got skills at all 3 levels, and is fearless when she's going to the hoop.   Peyton takes pride in her ability to get teammates involved, and her aggressiveness on getting rebounds.     Yael is a hardworker who puts the clamps on her opponent when she's playing defense. She will hound the ballhandler into eventually making a mistake; and she's capable of finishing the job. During one of her Sunday games, Yael poked away a steal and converted it for a layup herself.   Yael scored 6 points on three field goals during her team's second game of the day. She tells me that she plays well in on-ball defense, and her offensive game has improved a lot in recent years.     Teagan has a quick first step, and is in constant motion when she's on the floor. She's active in tracking down rebounds, chasing boards at all angles of the arc.   Teagen's work ethic is most evident on defense. She tells me that she's a "big dog" on D; getting after her opponent and providing constant pressure. She wants people to notice her hustle, and that she always gives 110%.     Abigail could turn into a really talented scorer for her team. She shows no hesitation when pulling up on an open 3-pointer, and I watched her take a rebound coast-to-coast for a converted layup.   She's a great defender, who has a knack for jumping passing lanes. She seems to be rely frustrating to play against if you're an offensive player; constantly active and disrupting shots.   Abigail has good ball control and makes great passes when she's trying to escape pressure.     Abigail provides excellent support on both ends of the court. She can pull a quick trigger on a 3-pointer, and got an early and-1 in her first game of the day.   But her best attributes might be her distribution skills. She tells me that she loves driving and kicking the ball to an open teammate, and she showcased an ability for drawing pressure and finding where to feed the ball.   She also plays strong defense, coming up with an impressive block in the post at one point, and never losing sight of her offensive assignment.     Brenna shows excellent toughness when she's on the court. She can drive the lane with intensity, and she absolutely never gives up on a play. She fights for position and has an impressive way of maneuvering into position when she gets the ball in her hands.   Brenna has an uncanny ability to create space and get open, where she'll usually convert a bucket. She can weave through the defense when there's heavy pressure, or go straight at a defender when she's going downhill.     Ameera doesn't have the height that some of her opponents possess, but that doesn't stop her from showing up on defense and keeping active hands. She has the ability to force turnovers, or simply disrupt the offense enough for someone else to make a mistake.   Ameera's got grit and tenacity, and she has the right level of basketball IQ to handle the ball well and set up her teammates for good shots.   She tells me that her shooting has improved in recent years, and she's gotten better at creating space between herself and the defender.
