IL Freshman Showcase: Team 2 Evaluations

70+ prospects fit for every level of college basketball from across the great state of Illinois flooded the gym for a fully loaded day of 3v3 and 5v5 competition. The live coverage was off the hook, and the prospects gave us plenty of material to post about! Here's a snapshot of the strengths I observed from the players competing for Team Two at the Prep Girls Hoops Illinois Freshman Showcase!    Lainie was a complete player and all-around difference maker for Team Two during the PGH Illinois Freshman Showcase. Good length, versatile skills, the high motor/hustle you want to have on your team, and a stat stuffer. Lainie ripped by with a burst on a baseline drive to cause a foul, set a defender up with a pocket dribble, and split the gap with a quick crossover to blow by, driving with long strides on her way to the rim for a left-handed finish in traffic. She has a confident stroke from beyond the arc. Lainie buried a smooth wing three and drilled a deep moonshot off the hop later on--swoosh. Her aggressive drives resulted in fouls and she knocked down free throws efficiently from the charity stripe. Lainie pushed the ball out using both hands in the open court and kept her eyes up. She split a sideline trap with a low crossover dribble, befuddled the final defender with a sweet fake-pass move, and earned another trip to the line. Look out, high schoolers.     Aniya is a guard who had a solid day for Team Two at the Illinois Freshman Showcase. She's quick, athletic, and a scrappy two-way player. Aniya showed quickness and the ability to penetrate off the dribble. She took the ball straight to the rim with a burst from the perimeter and went up strong for the two-foot finish. Aniya worked hard to apply pressure, and her scrappy defense produced steals. She used her shoulder to create space from pesky defenders and set ball screens to help alleviate pressure for teammates.     Twitchy, elusive ball-handling, dynamic scorer, effective facilitator, and disruptive on defense were adjectives I'd use to describe Khyan's game at the Illinois Freshman Showcase. She turned in a complete performance for Team Two that separated her throughout the event. She grabbed rebounds, facilitated the rock, and wreaked havoc with her in-your-face ball pressure. Khyan attacked hard downhill on a middle drive, landed with a jump stop, created space with a pivot, then converted a tough and-one floater with her off hand through contact. She completed the three-point play at the line. Khyan used a quick crossover dribble, then shifted into high gear to escape full-court pressure, accelerated through a gap, and earned another trip to the line. She added a clip to the highlight reel with a filthy between-the-legs crossover step-back three from the wing and converted back-to-back free throws after drawing a foul in transition by driving to the rim. Khyan made notable plays on the defensive end as well. She anticipated a pass on the perimeter, jumped in front to cause a deflection, scooped up the loose ball, then raced to the rim for a fast break finish with her left. Her quick hands poked out the ball for another steal up top, then she zipped an entry pass to a teammate inside on the next possession for an assist.     Teagan is a crafty point guard, and her sharp instincts/handles as a facilitator will give her high school program a spark in the backcourt. She reversed the court and shifted the defense with her smart, crisp skip passes, resulting in open looks for teammates. Teagan demonstrated quickness, fast dribbles, and excellent ball-handling control with her right and left. She dished out assists and impressed as she created space with shifty behind-the-back and crossover dribble combinations. Teagan was an effective court general for Team Two at the PGH Illinois Freshman Showcase.     You better keep your head on a swivel because Kaitlyn sets strong screens on the perimeter to create open driving lanes for ball-handlers. She was physical, determined, and an all-around impactful player for Team Two at the PGH Illinois Freshman Showcase. Her versatility and high motor really stood out. Kaitlyn showed her range by sinking a smooth corner three, crashed the glass to secure an offensive rebound, dished out a nice bounce pass to a backdoor cutter, deflected a pass for a steal, and cut to the basket for a strong catch and finish off two. One of her highlights happened when she maintained her concentration to adjust to a tipped pass during a fast break, scooped up the 50/50 ball, pivoted, forced the foul, and knocked down the free throw confidently at the line.     Defense doesn't go unnoticed, and that was Mahalia's calling card at the PGH Freshman Showcase. Her fast feet, athleticism, and strong build put ball-handlers in a box. She caused havoc at the top of the press and beat the ball to the spot at half court to force a turnover. Mahalia hit the deck to scrap for loose balls, put her defender in jail with a hostage dribble, and shielded the ball with her body in transition. She showed confidence as a three-point threat. Mahalia attacked on a hard drive down the baseline, landed on two feet, then stepped through to score a reverse layup with her off hand. Mahalia used both hands comfortably in the open court and scanned the floor to find open teammates. She dished out assists and applied great pressure defensively on the perimeter. Mahalia looks ready to make an impact at high school level and is a very promising guard prospect in this class.     Dezirae has great length and potential. She has the versatility to play multiple positions, and that's going to make her an asset at the high school level. She wasn't afraid to dive on the floor to secure a loose ball, stayed active as a rebounder, and sprinted back to defend in transition. Dezirare showed off her handles, changing hands quickly with a variety of between-the-legs/crossover dribbles before driving through the paint. She fit right in with Team Two at the Illinois Freshman Showcase and will be an intriguing prospect to watch over the coming years.     Lorelei dazzled with some impressive highlight plays for Team Two at the PGH Illinois Freshman Showcase. She's a crafty point guard prospect who has the skills and quickness to penetrate off the dribble or burn defenses from the perimeter. Lorelei drained a smooth corner three off a screen from a balanced setup and shot the ball confidently throughout the day. She blew by to score a speedy inside hand finish on a drive and consistently showed the ability to get downhill. Her behind-the-back/crossover dribble combos were crisp and fluid. Lorelai was active as a rebounder, and she'll be a welcome addition to the backcourt at the high school level.     Paris is a promising guard who made plays that helped Team Two be successful on the court. She moves well off the ball and finds open space. Paris made a smart read when her defender was in full denial on the perimeter, cut backdoor, caught the entry pass in stride, and made a smooth transfer to score the layup. She hustled after loose balls and did well defending in the gap. Paris has quickness and instincts that will make her a very productive player at the high school level.
