Carolinas Freshman Showcase: The defenders you want on your team

The event hosted a competitive field of talent, bringing girls from all across the Carolinas to compete over the 4 hours. In this article we will take a look at the best defenders in the gym this weekend. These girls flat out got after it from start to finish. The scrappy guard was the first player to dive on the floor after a loose ball and set the standard for the day. From sitting down in her stance on the perimeter and fighting through screens, to playing big at the rim, opposing players had a hard time scoring on her from start to finish. An unselfish player on the offensive player who is a capable shooter, Laela is at her best when guarding on the ball. There was a possession today where she picked up an opposing PG and turned her multiple times up the floor. On one possession in particular she got tripped by a screen, fell, and still got back up and hustled into the play forcing a steal for a team. Avery plays much longer than her size indicates, and showed fantastic timing on multiple occasions. More than once on the day Avery challenged shots at the rim and came away with several nice snatch blocks. Harmony's size at 6' kept her in front of most posts on the day, or at least in a position to force bad shots by the other team. When opposing players were lucky enough to get a clean shot off in the paint, Harmony was sure to clean up the defensive glass for her team, limiting them to one and done possessions. Standing at 5'9 and with length, speed, and bounce to match, Trinity was a match up nightmare for anyone she had to guard on Sunday. From the time she picked up in her stance to the time she was finishing a possession on the offensive end for her team, Trinity was one of the least scored on players of the showcase. A guard who was consistently in her stance, she was seldom surprised by things happening around her on the defensive end.
