As tryouts take place in high school gyms across the country this week, I made the drive up 75 North to Nashville for the All American On The Rise showcase. With the prep season fast approaching, I had my eyes trained closely on the very talented point guards who were in attendance. Each player showed why they have earned the hype and reputation's they carry with consistent, outstanding play on the court.

Ava may have been the best player at the event and that is not coming from me, but a national evaluator who was also at Antioch High School on Sunday. Just a few weeks ago I walked out of the Prep Girls Hoops Expo in Lebanon High School thinking the exact same thing. Zenner has the ball on a string and the combination of elite quickness and slight of hand had Ava wheeling and dealing from the point guard position all day. No one could stay in front of her, the deception she creates handling the ball caused a pause in defenders which she used to blow right by them. The first time I saw Ava she was dropping dimes in very impressive fashion primarily rather than looking to score. It was literally a whole different ball game yesterday as she scored more points than anyone there (except maybe Safari Underdue) without forcing one shot. The defense just flat out could not guard her and that included a bunch of kids with college offers. She is the real deal and proved without a shadow of a doubt she has earned her position and overall ranking in the state of Tennessee.

Amiah is one of the most unselfish players you will find on the various shoe circuits. The pass-first point guard is a refreshing throwback to when I grew up watching the NBA in the 90's. Lewis is very well-rounded, fundamentally sound player who is very responsible with the basketball. It was nice to see A-Bug be a little more assertive on the offensive end watching her play on Sunday. She is a very effective and efficient shooter from the perimeter, and I think she should take more of those shots when given the opportunity. She is the kind of player I would want in the position running my team getting sets called and executed from the sideline effectively, holding down her position defensively, and keeping everyone content by spreading around the basketball around. She is a very good point guard prospect in the 2029 class nationally as well, not just in Tennessee.

Anzlee was a player I had not seen play before but figured out who she was fairly quickly as she knocked down multiple shots from three-point range in the first session of the showcase. When the session two got underway and the five versus five started, Anzlee stood out again doing a number of things well while operating out of her natural position on the wing for most of the day. Hendrix unselfishly slide out to the wing and still had a big, positive impact on her team's success. Hendrix handled the ball very well in traffic and against pressure, in the halfcourt drove the ball into the paint, and dished it to open teammates several times for easy baskets. Anzlee also scored over and around defenders once she got on the interior proving she is not just a shooter. When she was operating at the point she was in control and made several very tough passes in tight quarters. I thought Hendrix had a very good day and should have a very productive sophomore season in Kentucky.

I am not sure how much taller Piper is going to get, I assume that she will, so what her true position may still be unknown as she is only in eighth grade. Skill wise, however, she is far past the vast majority of her contemporaries. At the three versus three station in session one, Piper knocked down two three-point shots and then scored again on the interior almost as soon as the event began. That few minutes would prove to be a sample of what the was coming from Seraphine the duration of the day. Piper handled the basketball like a point guard and initiated her team's offense quite a bit. When given the time and space, Seraphine did not hesitate to let her shot go and the ball went through the net more times than not. Some shots were from NBA range which was quite impressive for a kid who hasn't entered high school as a student yet. The shooting display was not the only part of her game that stood out as Piper handled the ball with the calm and composure of a much older player against pressure. She is long, very talented, and did not lack confidence competing against much older kids. I am glad I saw her play when I did because she has the chance to be at the top of her class in Tennessee.

Taylor was another point guard prospect who I had seen recently at the Prep Girls Hoops Expo in Lebanon, Tennessee. There, in addition to her point guard duties, Hollins proved her ability to knock down shots from behind the three-point line and midrange, in addition to getting to the basket and finishing. Taylor did the same on Sunday, but with a very talented cast around her focused more on spreading the basketball around rather than scoring herself. She did a great job initiating and facilitating the offense and when Hollins got the ball back, she kept it moving. She plays the game with a high IQ, which was seen especially feeding the post. Taylor never got into a rush, waited on her teammate to establish position, and then hit them between the numbers in a position to score.
