After an exciting day of hoops at the PGH Michigan Expo out West, I was eager to see the East Side talent taking the court at the HBCU Showcase on Sunday. I anticipated familiar prospects to be at the event, but had a feeling that there would be some new names in attendance. A combination of new and familiar prospects caught my attention throughout the day. The girls had an opportunity to participate in drills and competed in multiple games, which allowed me to make a more thorough evaluation. Here are five prospects who consistently contributed to their team, made an impact on both sides of the ball, and separated themselves throughout the event.

Doc Cornell, PT4L HBCU Showcase, Romulus Summit Academy, Sep. 27, 2026.

Jayla asserted herself early and often at the HBCU Showcase, establishing herself firmly as an elite post prospect. Jayla cleaned up the offensive glass and terrorized opponents with her shot-blocking on the defensive end. She protected the basket with ferocity and swatted two straight shot attempts in the paint. Jayla muscled her way into position to secure rebounds on both ends, scored strong putbacks, finished effectively at the rim, and turned in a dominant, complete performance.

Maria has a look of fierce determination at the HBCU Showcase, and she separated herself as a complete point guard prospect throughout the event. Early on, it was her presence as a slasher, facilitator, and defender that caught my attention. She's athletic and extremely crafty in the lane. Maria drove downhill, elevated, and switched hands in the air to score a layup. She kept her eyes up and hit a cutter with a crisp bounce pass in stride for an assist. Maria attacked with a burst to split the gap, went up strong, then scored a strong and one finish at the rim. She secured rebounds and immediately pushed the tempo in transition. Maria demonstrated good balance and mechanics while shooting threes in warmups and knocked down a smooth straightaway three in the game. She converted a tough finish off a quick drive and made a smart dump-off pass after drawing the final defender to her dribble during a fast break. Maria saved her best for the Championship Game. She drove to the paint, used counter pivots to create space, then stepped through to score an and-one floater through contact. Maria handled pressure with poise and escaped it at half court using a speedy pocket dribble/crossover combo move, then drove by with a burst to score a contested finish. She applied full-court pressure to create steals and made a smart extra pass dish after forcing the help to commit to her dribble. Maria is a phenomenal court general who does it all on both sides of the ball. She received recognition as my Championship Game MVP.

Mariah played with a toughness, resolve, and grit that separated her throughout the HBCU Showcase. I made a note of her aggressiveness as a driver. She has an extra burst off the dribble, shifty crossovers, and slashed to the hoop, forcing the defense to put her on the free-throw line multiple times. She maintains an athletic defensive stance, is disciplined, and doesn't fall for fakes. Mariah didn't bite on a shot fake, then closed out quickly to block the shot. She slid her feet quickly to cut off a baseline drive and stepped up to the challenge by taking on the toughest defensive assignment in the Championship Game. She picked up at full court and half court. Mariah defended space with her feet, flipped her hips to turn to sprint, and kept her hands up to close passing windows. Mariah was one of the best defenders, and she'll be an excellent addition to a college backcourt.

Ka'mauri possesses 6-foot length, elite athleticism, and advanced fundamental polish to her game that makes her a high-level guard prospect in Ohio's 2030 class. She delivered a memorable performance at the HBCU Showcase. Ka'mauri has great feel around the basket, crafty ball-handling control, and touch. She attacked downhill and created space with an inside-out dribble to score the layup, made a quick transfer off the catch to score an off-hand finish, and took a defensive rebound the other way with pace to score a coast-to-coast layup. Ka'mauri contested well without fouling and swatted a shot away on the defensive end. She threw a long pass up the court to a sprinting teammate for an assist and showed off her range by sinking a smooth wing three. Ka'mauri is a lefty prospect with a high ceiling, and she's a freshman to have on your radar heading into the high school season.

Shifty, twitchy, cat-like quickness, explosive first steps, and silky smooth ball-handling are what you see when Kazyia takes the floor. She separated herself at the HBCU Showcase with her electric playmaking abilities. Kazyia took one dribble and scored with a high finish off the glass. She put defenders on skates with elusive crossovers and behind-the-back combinations and went by for an off-hand finish. Kazyia raced up the floor, created a lane to drive with a double-crossover, then earned a trip to the free-throw line. She got to the rim, knocked down a mid-range jumper, and hit another tough shot from the corner. Kazyia applied aggressive pressure on the perimeter and picked the ball-handler's pocket for a steal. She finished a fast break drive with a bucket and went up strong on a hard take to the rim for an and-one layup. Kayzia sprinted in to secure rebounds on the offensive end, and she's going to be an exciting addition to a college program.
