Two very exciting days of watching some of the top girls programs compete at the Arizona Athletic Grounds in Mesa, AZ. Great teams/programs more time than not have great guard play. As much as I would have loved to I was unable to see every team play. Below are guards from games I observed in person help their teams to success this weekend.

Medina is a competitor. She sets the tone for the Blue Devils both on the court and on the bench. Dora is relentless on the defensive side putting constant pressure on the opposition. Showed she can guard the full length of the court for long periods of time. Extremely strong motor. Fearless. Did not matter who or how big the opponent was Medina took the ball to the paint and found ways to score. In their game against Mesa despite the height and talent of the Jackrabbits forward Medina couldn't be denied. Was able to finish tough contested shots with either hand and showed the ability to knock down the three ball.

The Lancers will have a new look this year and Nelson is ready to shine. Jayci was one of the more skilled guards this weekend. She was very poised. A true floor general that directed the offense showing great IQ for the game. Very effective in passing and involving her teammates. She knows how to create a shot and can score at a high rate off the dribble. This is a prospect you'll be hearing more about throughout the high school season.

Munoz is one of the up and coming guards in Southern AZ. A player that gets the entire team involved. Shes a two way player and averaged 5 assists and 5 steals in the games I saw. Very smart with her decision making, didn't really seem to get rushed by the opponents pressure. High percentage shooter. Very quick with the ball. The improvement I've seen Munoz make in the last year is impressive. Just entering her Sophomore year Arlette will be a sought after guard should she continue making the strides in her game that she is.

Warren played solid all weekend but stood out in the the Lions game against San Carlos. When her team needed a spark she delivered. She put up nine points in the first half including a deep three. She was forcing turnovers with her defensive pressure and accounted for five steals. Very good awareness and always seemed to be in the right spot. Hustled for rebounds and came up more times than not with the 50/50 balls. Her high energy and fearlessness against any match-up she had stood out. Pusch Ridge has a talented young core that'll be fun to watch this year.

Berg is breaking into her new role as the PG for the Thunderbolts. The incoming sophomore looked the part. She confidently handled the ball and lead the offense. Strong passer and accurate through traffic. Can see the floor at a high level. Has a really nice mid range shot and is very capable of knocking down the three ball. A vocal leader and plays with a high motor.

Tiznado might've played with the most energy the entire weekend. She didn't necessarily fill out the stat book but she may have been one of the most impactful players I saw this weekend. A true defender that can guard the length of the court and didn't seem to ever be "out matched" against an opponent. Strong one both ends. Can knock down shots and create on the offensive end. Again, one of the most impactful players of the weekend.
